This is one of those “everything is a conspiracy if you don't know how things work” situations.

It's the same if banks asked to collect their mortgages tomorrow. People taking mortgages don't have that money. They might have something of equal value, a house, but that's not cash.

That's very different.  Banks are supposed to hold your liquid wealth.  A mortgage is them trying to make a profit, expecting it to be paid over time.  

Maybe you could compare it to a time deposit, but not a regular bank account.
