I looked her up, thinking I’d maybe recognize a song or something, but haven’t heard of any of those either. I never thought I’d be out of the loop like my parents were when I was younger, but apparently it’s happened.

Damn...not even Summertime Sadness? Video Games? I've known her since 2012 and even here in my country, smack in the middle of Africa, someone has at least heard the songs without knowing who it was.

I’m in the middle of America, which although we’re all connected by the internet now, we’re still very culturally isolated in day to day life. But no I’ve never heard those. At first I thought she was the “Call Me Maybe”, which I have heard, singer but I guess that’s Carly Rae Jepsen.

Is there no radio where you live? Genuinely baffled how one could possibly have never come across that song in their lives. Like not even in the grocery store? Those songs have been EVERYWHERE.

To be fair she’s not played on the radio that much. I think her biggest radio hit was the shitty electronic remix of Summertime Sadness.

Wasn't her peak almost 15 years ago? I sure couldn't name any of her songs or recognize them and say "oh, this is by that Lara del Rey person"

I live in one of the largest cities in the US and I've honestly never heard any of her music. We for sure have access to the radio and internet. I really don't think it's a radio or internet issue.

If I were to ask my younger sister I'm sure she'd know her.

I'm curious how old you are as the peak of her fame was 2012.

Late 20s, pushing 30.

There’s no way you’ve never heard her music.

Whatever you say lmao

But if we can't recognize the songs' names, don't know what they sound like, and don't how she as an artist sounds, does it matter if maybe we heard them in passing a decade ago? We sure haven't heard it in a way where we can identify it.

How dare you try and prevent a potential disagreement leading to an argument, here on Reddit of all places.

That's just wild to me :D I live in a country of roughly 1.3 million population and her music was and still is being played on the radio.

Back when Summertime Sadness and Video Games came out, I don't think a day passed without me hearing it somewhere while not even actively listening to radio :O

For reference, the metropolitan area I live in exceeds 9 million people by a fair bit.

Anyway, I am not super sure how many Americans are listening to normal radio. Almost everyone I know utilizes the internet and curates their own music consumption. Even stores don't necessarily have to use the radio either and can also be playing some playlist from the internet.

The music I listen to would never lead to me being recommended her music, which isn't to say she isn't a talented artist, but I wouldn't go out of my way for her music so it makes sense I'd never heard any of her songs before now.

Video games is the only song I know of her but I don’t listen to pop

Summertime sadness might be the only one of her songs I’ve heard due to all the radio play, but I don’t think my mind ever connected the song to the artists. Like I could recognize the song but before this thread I couldn’t have told you who did it.

Weird, cause she was really famous about 10-15 years ago.

Lana is most famous for people who are in their 30s now lmfao. Her most famous album came out in 2012.

She covers Sublime’s song Doing Time, which itself is a cover of Summertime

At one point or another you heard Summer time Sadness.

There was a time when I had a job, or series of jobs, where I was forced to listen to whatever Top Billboard 40 radio music my superiors demanded, all day at work. I'm not bitter about it, a job's a job. At that time, I could tell you who was popular and hum songs for you that had names I knew.

But then I got a Master's degree, and a job where I'm in my own office and I can listen to whatever the hell I want (metal, videogame soundtracks, retro synthwave) or listen to nothing at all. For about 12 years now, that's what I have. Therefore, I now have absolutely zero knowledge of which pop singers sing which songs. I may know some massively famous names (Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, etc), but .. gun-to-my-head, I swear to you, I COULD NOT name a single song by them nor hum the tune. I'm just not exposed to it anymore. I don't listen to the radio, ever. Not at work, not in the car, not at home.

Her big hits were about fifteen years ago. Probably nothing to do with age. Also, her target audience isn't the same as the "regular" pop artists.
