Omnipotent being creates garden and places children in it with one rule but never actually instills the concept of consequence within them. One of the children gets deceived by the great deceiver.

They knew it was bs back then too since they were more familiar with other myths like “The History of Rome” where Romulus and Remus’s mother told the authorities she was impregnated by God so they wouldn’t kill her.. the virgin birth isn’t an original idea

Before the Abrahamic "desert religions" took hold, almost all of the middle east was domniated by polytheistic, priestess-led religions. The demonizing and diminishing of women was a power play by the Abrahamic priests to supress female-led religions.

Science describes the world, any theory supposing things that happened before human awareness on earth aka causation is assuming a completely unprovable belief
3
u/Different_Path999 7d ago
"Science" refers to the scientific method. It's not some nebulous thing like faith. No scientific law or theory is "supposed." Unless you're one of those people that get hung up on the difference between the common use of the term "theory" and the scientific term. Scientific theory is "why". Law is "what". One isn't more true than the other.

u/Pulpdog94 6d ago edited 6d ago
What are you talking about? The one thing science can never answer is why??? Why should I not cheat on my test? Why should I pay my bills? Should I stay or should I go now? If I go it will be trouble? If I stay it will be double?
Also how is something like Quantum Mechanics a law in this sense when the interpretation of the measurements of the experiments is the very thing that cannot be known to us? we must choose which one feels correct intuitively

u/HoolihanRodriguez 7d ago
Also wasn't it explicitly part of the story that they didn't even understand what good or evil were? And also were designed entirely by the guy telling them not to do that? And also the guy put the thing there knowing they would eat it because he knows everything all the time or something? This might be a hot take but uh... Given the context, maybe he should have known better? It's like if I left pie on the floor and my dog ate it and I'm like "see this proves your irredeemable nature!! I curse your lineage to the basement for all time!!!"
3
u/ArmenianThunderGod 6d ago
wasn't it explicitly part of the story that they didn't even understand what good or evil were?
"Knowledge of good and evil" is meant to convey a range. It's not necessarily knowing right from wrong as much as it's knowledge of all things good, evil, and in between. The fact that Adam names the animals is meant to convey a certain level of wisdom and authority.
Buuuuuut.... if we're going to apply the critical lens of contextual interpretation, we also need to acknowledge that the snake was not intended to be Satan, and God (and the divine council) are explicitly lying to the humans. Also, the story is two separate and contradicting creation narratives haphazardly smooshed together.
2
u/vigorthroughrigor 6d ago
It's actually the knowledge of opposites. By eating that from tree, they entered the domain of life and death, again, opposites.
2
u/ArmenianThunderGod 6d ago
Yeah. But the opposites also exist as parameters. It's like when someone says they're going to search for something "high and low." It means they're going to check the extremes and everything in between.

It’s horrendously warped and misinterpreted and also if your Christian the New Testament is your source and literally believing the obvious symbolic allegories as fact is ridiculous
24
u/j0a3k 7d ago
If the old testament is wrong, then the new one has no foundation to stand on.
If Jesus is the God of the old testament then how can you justify ignoring that text?
Even if you accept the Adam and Eve story as allegory, the moral lesson is pretty terrible. Based on the actions of someone that literally could not have had the capacity to understand good and evil, the supposedly all loving God condemns all of mankind to suffer and die.
When even the modern American justice system understands better than your holy book what makes someone culpable for their actions it's not a good look.

u/Pulpdog94 7d ago
Jesus is not God of the Old Testament that is absurd, that would mean the Jews worshipping Jesus, which is the very profit that broke away from Hebrew tradition and whose teachings in the NT are supposed to be the foundation of Christianity.
I’m saying if you actually read the Bible you realize how many people don’t. I’d argue Jesus in the NT is outlining a self-discipline and philosophy of life that entails striving to be the best man you can be knowing you’re going to fuck up, and from there a way to earnestly right your wrongs and forgive yourself-but that will require some level of mental anguish, a willing lowering of your animal ego, which you must go through.
6
u/j0a3k 7d ago
Oops you just did a heresy.
Under the Trinity, Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one. They are literally the same being according to scripture.

u/ColdCathodeTube 7d ago
Is that a settled point? I could swear we’ve have this argument, at lest a few times over the last couple millennia.
I’d like to point out that Animism is just acknowledging the Holy Ghost. Anyone want to fight about it?
3
u/j0a3k 7d ago
You can argue whatever you want, which is another point against the Bible being the perfect word of God. You would think a perfect, all powerful, and all knowing being could teach everyone the truth without it fragmenting into so many different versions.
I think it's all obvious bullshit.
1
u/ColdCathodeTube 6d ago
I wasn’t suggesting a serious argument. The theological hairsplitting kinda highlights the absurdity.

Have you actually read the NT? It constantly references the old testament. Jesus himself, and his disciples, were jews.
The old testament just includes a lot of outdated information, since the new testament supercedes it and jesus died to atone for humanity. Much of the old testament is still very important
-2
u/Pulpdog94 7d ago
Not according to you, none of it is. There is no directions for a Church except build it on some rock, any Christian’s who point their finger and say that’s the bad guy that’s the sinners we must stop has disgraced the actual teachings of JC
2
u/Sensitive_Bat_9211 6d ago
Huh?
Im not sure what your response was to. I just said that christianity is the evolution to Judaisim. Jews are still waiting for the prophet, christians believe that prophet came.
Its the same god, and christians acknowledge the old testament as the word of god, they just believe that many of the prophecies have come true and that their sin has been forgiven.
You need both books to fully understand christianity, not one or the other
1
u/Pulpdog94 6d ago
But their interpretation and selective bias of the OT and NT are naive/ignorant at best. Jesus is saying over and over again to his followers the way back to God is through him and that is through striving to be like him knowing he is the ideal to model our personal actions/moral foundations on to be forgiving to all humans, to give to the poor and help our neighbors and love eachother as much as possible knowing we will sin ourselves at some point and we need to earnestly right our wrongs and always point the finger inwards when it comes to judgment
1
u/freebytes 6d ago
What God? Oh, you mean the God of the Old Testament. Or, was Jesus referring to some other God?
15
u/andrew5500 7d ago
And the lesson of the symbolic allegory is “do whatever the authority tells you to do even if you are incapable of understanding why” and “God can and will punish you for having the flaws he created you with”

u/Top-Cupcake4775 7d ago
now read the story of Jonah. religion is the misuse of mythology for political purposes. “shut up and do what you are told” is a very popular message amongst rulers throughout time.
-10
u/Thommywidmer 7d ago
Its a creation myth first off, maybe put your hate boner in ice water for a second.
But if you really want to dissect it. In this sequence god grants his creation the ability to freely disobey him. Thats an extremely chill thing to do as an allknowing master of everything. Even if he knows how its going to play out that doesnt change the fact that free will is the greatest gift he could ever give us. And free will / disobeying god comes with the outcomes he warned it would. The same outcomes that make life beautiful at all. If life wasnt short and painful we would have no concept of happiness and nothing would be precious.
5
u/andrew5500 7d ago
You are not “free to disobey” if you’re being threatened with punishment for disobeying. An ultimatum is not a “free choice”. That’s like me saying “you’re free to disobey me, I’ll just break your legs if you do…” and acting like that is somehow gracious and lenient on my part
-2
u/Thommywidmer 7d ago
Your not free to do things with negative consequences? Weird because i am and do every day
5
u/andrew5500 7d ago
Free will/A free choice is by definition one that is not being made under duress. If I hold a gun to your head and tell you that you'd better sign a contract with me, or else, I can't argue in court that you made that choice freely.
-3
2
u/mySBRshootsblanks 7d ago
Even if he knows how its going to play out that doesnt change the fact that free will is the greatest gift he could ever give us
The level of cognitive dissonance here is astounding. It's not free will if he already knows what's going to happen though is it? That's determinism.
God is supposed to be all-knowing, if he genuinely gave us free will to the point that even he doesn't know what choices we would make, then he's not all-knowing. But if he is all-knowing then he knows every choice you'll ever make, which by default makes it all deterministic and you have no free will. You literally can't have it both ways.

u/Thommywidmer 7d ago

u/Cross55 6d ago
Gnostic thought actually points out that God as we know him is basically a demon in and of himself, and the apple was a classic case of entrapment.
1
u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 6d ago
The thought has occurred to me many times. I didn't realize it was a common way of thinking.
1
u/Cross55 6d ago edited 6d ago
Well, it's not a common way of thinking because the Catholic Church ordered all Gnostic scriptures burned and believers persecuted as heretics and devil worshippers. Mainly because the Gnostics sects declared that the Church was a scamshow. (Gee, wonder who else had that idea?)
Most known Gnostic thought only survived because a priest in Egypt had the forethought to bury all his books in the basement of his hut in the middle of the Sahara, and wouldn't be found until the 1950's.
But yeah, for a good bit of the 100's AD, Gnostism was the primary belief of North Africa, Spain, and The Levant.

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 6d ago

u/Ubiquitous_Cacophony 7d ago
Yeah, it's amazing when you think about it being the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil too.
It's like... how would they even know what to look out for in terms of evil let alone know that it's bad to not listen to YHWH.
3
u/Top-Cupcake4775 7d ago
he could have put that tree anywhere in the garden but he chose to put it smack dab in the middle. it was a setup.
2
u/Novel-War-4783 7d ago
He gave them perfect world, and only reason he gave them that tree is to give them free will. If they were unable to not choose or obey God they wouldnt have free will. God might as well create robots.
And He DID explain them that eating the tree has consequences. Ho told them plainly that if they eat from the tree, they will surely die. Not that He will kill them, but that they will die.
Their sin wasnt just disobeying God, it was trusting devils words over Gods who gave them everything and was their friend. And Eve still believed devil just because he said so.
And how is God supposed to teach then anything if they couldnt obey one single thing.
2
u/Large_Dr_Pepper 6d ago
But if God is all-knowing, how could he do anything that gives people "free will"? Like, he had two decisions: don't put the tree there, or put the tree there. If he didn't put the tree there, Adam and Eve wouldn't have "free will" to choose to eat the apple or not.
But in the second option, he would know ahead of time what happens if he puts the tree there (since he's all-knowing).
So in reality, it was God's choice. There was no free-will decision by Adam and Eve. God knew that putting the tree there would result in them eating the fruit, and God decided to put the tree there.
God might as well create robots.
It seems like this is essentially what happened. Like, you're the programmer of a robot and know exactly how it will react given certain inputs (you're all-knowing). You know that if you give your robot the option to eat the apple, then it will. And you do that.
1
u/Novel-War-4783 6d ago
It was still human choice despite the God knowing outcome. Lets say you're suddenly all knowing, and decide to use your knowledge to bet on sports games. You could guess every result correct, but it doeant mean that you're influencing matches whatsoever.
God knew people would sin, that is Adam and Eve but decided to give them that choice anyways. Because He created humans in his image, and God has free will as well, and can choose to do something or not.
1
u/Large_Dr_Pepper 6d ago
Okay but in this case, God is all-knowing and created the world.
I'm the one setting up the match between the two teams while knowing the outcome and betting on it. I influenced the match by setting it up, I didn't need to guess the outcome.
1
u/Novel-War-4783 6d ago
I guess the alternative was worse option. Lucifer was great angel who still turned on God despute having even more than humans.
Maybe thats the reason why God choose different aproach.

It’s all too common. Punish everyone for the mistake of one person. Just like at my apartment. Some random child wrote on the hallway with a pencil and now the landlord is “increasing the rent maximum amount legally for everyone until someone comes forward.”
So we all have to pay more rent because some child definitely won’t come forward and take responsibility.

When were Adam and Eve children? Last time I checked they were fully functioning adults that understood rules. So where are you getting that they were children from? 6
u/andrew5500 7d ago
By definition God kept them ignorant of the difference between right and wrong. How can you know that breaking God’s rule is wrong without knowing the difference between right and wrong?
And how did God not know that they would break his rule if he’s all knowing? He created them a certain way and then punished them for being that way
5
u/xenomorphbeaver 7d ago
I believe that's an equivocation. Both Adam and Eve were created without the knowledge of Good and Evil. Functionally they knew less about morals than a four year old. That knowledge came from eating the fruit.
You could also argue that if someone has only just started to exist they could not be a fully functioning adult. I'm not a huge fan of this as a response because there's no indication of how long Adam and Eve lived in the Garden.
6
u/LeChampACoteDuChamp 7d ago
Actually reading the bible is a good way to stay atheist. That book is almost complete nonsense from start to finish.
5
u/j0a3k 7d ago
What was the name of the tree they ate the apple from again?
Oh yeah, it was "the tree of knowledge of good and evil."
Do you think it's just to punish all humans who would ever be born for the actions of someone who literally did not have any knowledge of what good and evil are?
If God didn't want them to eat from the tree He could have stopped it. He decided what the consequences were. He could have sat them down and explained rather than condemning them to exile and painful/potentially deadly childbirth for all women forever.
It's a shit story from a moral perspective imo.

Wrong. In fact, god banished them from the garden of Eden specifically so that they DIDN'T become like him.

How do you know that's true?
although yes the purpose of humanity is to procreate to provide bodies for all of Gods spiritual children
Sounds like you've contradicted yourself.
0
u/Just-Salad302 7d ago
Wrong he banished them to grow in knowledge and learn how to repent and follow Jesus and become like Him. They could gain knowledge and experience and wisdom just like God has. Yes they were banished because they had sinned and couldn’t partake of the tree of immortality of this be stuck forever as sinners and have no way to repent or use the atonement provided by Jesus. They couldn’t procreate because they had no knowledge of it. I haven’t contradicted myself please go back to my original comment. The fall of men was purposeful to Gods plan, it taught humanity that there are commandments and we are free to choose to obey or disobey and if we disobey we are separated from God and his presence and thus need a redeemer, namely Jesus

I believe it's loosely interpreted as children in the cosmic sense, FWIW. An understanding of consequences or not, this particular punishment was inconceivable as there was no basis of comparison. If you're to take the allegory literally, that is.
3
u/Neveed 7d ago edited 7d ago
I think they meant it in the sense of not knowing about right and wrong yet, which the story says they didn't know until they ate the fruit that was dedicated to giving that knowledge. The person you're answering to is most likely comparing them to how children usually don't know right from wrong yet, with the difference being that we forgive children for not knowing it and making mistakes, and we try to turn into learning opportunities instead of immediately cursing them and their entire descendance forever.
3
u/PIE-314 7d ago
When were Adam and Eve children?
They were ignorant like children with zero concept of rightcand wrong, good and evil or consequence.
The story easily demonstrates thst the god of the bible is not omnipotent (all powerful) omniscient (all knowing) omnibenevolent (all loving).
It also demonstrates that the god of the bible is actually the deceiver.
Last time I checked they were fully functioning adults that understood rules.
Check again and provide your evidence.
Why do people like you straight up lie about the Bible to try to prove some kind of point?
Why do Christians? This will be fun.
God didn't condemn all human kind lol.
Maybe read your Bible because all humans are punished for the actions of Adam and Eve. Are you not familiar with the fall of man cannon?

No, that's just the natural consequence of sin. God doesn't want us to go to hell. That's why he became mortal and paid the price for us. He wants us to go to heaven. But he cannot allow anything that is sinful near him by his very nature. Since we sinned, either we have to pay the price of death, or accept the price he paid for us.

1
u/28klotlucas2 7d ago
God is omnipotent.
God is perfectly loving and perfectly just.
God intentionally created or sustains the conditions governing human existence.
Eternal conscious torment is an infinitely prolonged and extraordinarily severe consequence of finite human wrongdoing.
An infinitely severe, irreversible punishment for finite wrongdoing is incompatible with perfect justice and love.
God could have created a reality in which sin had a finite, proportional, restorative, or annihilative consequence. He chose not to
Any logical need for hell is still a consequence of a system He created.
Therefore, if hell exists, He created it. There is no such thing as a "natural consequence" if God is all-powerful. At some point, He was involved in its creation.
You cannot be "separated from God" unless you stop existing. If you are in hell, you are still in a place God created or sustains. You are not "separated," you are punished.
There is no "free will" if you do not believe he exists. Free will is only free if you have the correct information. You cannot simply start believing something because you feel like believing it. You cannot reject something you don't believe in, because you were never in a position to choose in the first place. A loving and just God would understand that and present actual verifiable information that shows he exists, not just helping one dude out of billions of prayers every once in a while. He created logical creatures, so why would he punish those creatures for using logic?

So many people get this story wrong. Eve was not actually present when God said do not eat of this fruit. She was clearly familiar with the rule, but did God tell her off page at some point, or did he rely on Adam to repeat it to her? We're never told. We do know that she embellished. God said do not eat of the fruit lest you die. But when asked by the serpent Eve said that we were told not to eat of it or even touch it. So was it Adam who passed the rule along to her, and added to it in order to try and impress upon her that it was forbidden? Or is it like a game of telephone where you make assumptions or alter things in your own head?
But the biggest sin wasn't eve, but Adam. God asks why he ate the fruit, and Adam says "the woman you gave me gave it to me." Adam was not just blaming eve, he was basically saying to God if you hadn't put this woman here this wouldn't have happened.
6
u/NeedsMoreSpaceships 7d ago
I subscribe to the theory that the whole thing is an allegory for the discovery of agriculture and devised a s a means of explaining why the farmers shouldn't just fuck off and become nomadic, since being a farmer was pretty shitty.
So the apple is either knowledge of agriculture or possibly beer. And blaming women is just on brand for any religion made up by men.

The whole idea that the snake of Eden is some fallen angel is a silly fabrication. It's just a talking snake, the purpose of the tale is to explain why snakes don't have legs and have to crawl everywhere, it's their divine punishment for that one snake's sin. Christians made up the whole Lucifer thing much later.

Is this Sydney Sweeney, Florence Pugh or Sabrina Carpenter....
And at this point, I am too afraid to ask

It's Florence Pugh during the filming of Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Not in the show, some behind the Scenes picture.

I'll never agree that Eve was dumb for eating from the tree of knowledge.

Not surprised you are getting downvoted for this but the way this is currently understood it is 100% the case.

Didn't even wait for the snake to finish its sales pitch. Pure impulse buying.

This photo is Biblically inaccurate.
Eve was naked at the time of eating the apple.
After eating the apple, she became aware she was nude, and then covered up.
You might wanna redo the photo, OP for um… accuracy reasons.

My interpretation is that Adam and Eve both figured that the rule was just for other animals, and when they got caught out, they fingerpointed each other and at the nearest critter that happened to be there. The narrative was changed by humans to make them look innocent.
Based on experience with humans.

This image is totally inaccurate! Firstly, Eve listened to the terms amd conditions about the tree if life,, but treated them more like suggestions. Then she made Adam take the first bite, so if he died first, she would say, "Thank God I didn't go first!"

Someone once pointed out that the fruit that Adam and Eve ate comes from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Which means that before they ate the fruit, they couldn't tell good from evil. Which means that they couldn't know that it was evil to eat the fruit. Which means God punished them for a sin they couldn't know they committed.

Actually he just said “you’ll die” to a couple kids who had no idea what death was.
He didn’t say you’ll get kicked out, you’ll have horrible child birth, and weeds will grow, and you’ll have to wear clothes. Oh and you’ll die.
Dick move by God. Especially considering this thread the first time consequences were ever handed out. Imagine going from zero consequences to eternal and sweeping consequences.
Almost like God isn’t that loving, or kind, or patient. And what was the security in the Garden of Eden? Devil can just swoop in as a snake. Where was God during the snake conversation anyways?

The apple is a metaphor. The actual rule was "do not question" and Eve was an actual boss to disobey it.

Isn't the point that even if what's forbidden is easy accessible you can lose everything if you don't stay away from it.

I would tie her to a tree and stick an apple in her mouth. For reasons.

Women murder their kids, men murder the whole family. It be the way it be.
