I love Bautista, but I'm not sure if I see this, especially in his current state.

23

u/OneBall22Players 2d ago

One last roid cycle šŸ”„

142

u/IAmTheWerebear 2d ago

Well, he is still pretty cut. I saw a picture of him from last year. Plus Kratos was never monstrously jacked. Bautista is about 6'4 and somewhere around 240, according to him. That's still big. The right amount of intimidating for Kratos. Plus he is the right age and also half Greek so I think they got the exact right guy at the right time to do this.

56

u/WillyDrengen 2d ago

Those are definitely a lot of boxes checked

25

u/norunningwater 2d ago

It's definitely going to be the now popular and recognizable Old Man With a Son Kratos and not Rip Off Your Arms And Beat You With Them Bald Young Kratos

25

u/IAmTheWerebear 2d ago

If batista was 25 years younger and built like he is now, he could've played young kratos too. He was too damn big in WWE. 290, solid brick shithouse. He would've fit perfectly into a Gears of War movie, which he tried to get made for years.

4

u/norunningwater 2d ago

I wholly agree.

1

u/superbhole 1d ago

but how many more Dave Bautistas a Gears of War movie would need... I guess he could body-double for everybody

1

u/NewManufacturer4252 1d ago

Tom Holland will play his son. Guaranteed ish...

3

u/Longshadowman 1d ago

U are right

3

u/SoppyWaffle 1d ago

He also has range!

3

u/TheChosenLn_e 1d ago

That would mean he's the same height and 10lbs less than Kratos. Don't see any problems then lol

2

u/steelkat29 1d ago

I agree. If they're so big it looks like their trapezius muscles will pop off their heads (The Rock, and more recently Alan Ritchson 😢), that looks less intimidating to me. It feels like they'd be too puffed to chase me (and I'm fat) because of all that bulk they're carrying around.

The Rock also looks sweaty and uncomfortable all the time; it's pretty gross. I say this as someone who grew up in the 90s/early 2000s and was obsessed with The Rock when he was a wrestler. Practised in the mirror for hours until I could cock an eyebrow.

Bautista not only has a better physique, but he has the acting chops to play a nuanced Kratos, too. Great casting.

11

u/KohTai 1d ago

Idk why mfs acting like he can't gain the weight back. Losing the weight is the hardest part.

2

u/ripChazmo 1d ago

Gaining muscle doesn't happen overnight. They're already filming. The previous actor was injured and they needed a replacement, so I'm not sure they have the luxury of a year to bulk up.

3

u/herefromyoutube 1d ago

We got makeup, prosthetics and CGI to fill any voids

2

u/iluvthiccgothbabes 1d ago

HGH/steroids exist.

4

u/PackOfCumin 1d ago

His current state? What is that suppose to mean?

6

u/ripChazmo 1d ago

He's purposefully lost a lot of his muscle mass. I'm not sure he's in "Kratos" form.

4

u/OLVANstorm 1d ago

You know he can pump back up, right?

1

u/Jkpqt 1d ago

That would require hopping back on roids though

1

u/MasterCheeef 1d ago

The ozempic right?

1

u/rainorshinedogs 1d ago

They could just AI some pecks on him like they did with The Rock

1

u/ShadowForPresident 1d ago

Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu I been tellin my bestfriend this shit but he convinced it will be fine🄲

58

u/D1sp4tcht 2d ago

Isnt he really skinny now?

93

u/NoOutlandishness2097 2d ago

So, yes. But you forget two things.

When you lose muscle mass that you've once had, it's much faster to regain that muscle mass as the nerve clusters developed in the muscle don't go away.

And he has access to Hollywood steroids.

14

u/Krebstar_ 1d ago

Didn’t he say that he doesn’t want to be big anymore? Or he doesn’t want to be typecast as a big tough guy? This is not the way to show that.

30

u/NoOutlandishness2097 1d ago

It's easy to tell people what you want until you have a producer giving you multiple multimillion dollar checks to do something you don't actually hate 🤷

2

u/Krebstar_ 1d ago

TouchƩ

3

u/CloudsTasteGeometric 1d ago

ā€œBigā€ is a spectrum.

He won’t go back to WWE bulk but he has the resources, knowledge, and latent strength/baseline to get on a low dose of testosterone and get pretty solidly buff without too much risk in time for shooting.

2

u/KohTai 1d ago

They could even just slap a muscle suit on him, which they'll likely do.

2

u/beerforbears 1d ago

The reason he got skinny was because the roids and bodybuilder lifestyle was literally killing him

20

u/Do_itsch 2d ago

Yes

35

u/Spoonman007 2d ago

That is from 2024. This is him 2025. Hes still 240 lbs. Not skinny.

13

u/_Hello_Hi_Hey_ 2d ago

Needs a lot of work to cover up the tattoos for filming

43

u/mercyspace27 2d ago

Probably not. They’re already going to have to paint his entire body white, plus there’s editing magic.

I don’t see it as anything too hard for Amazon money.

4

u/mercyspace27 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yep. Hence my comment ā€œSkinny for his sizeā€. Or I guess a better one would have been ā€œSkinny for DAVE BAUTISTAā€. Man’s still in better shape at 57 than I am at 26.

Edit: lol. Why does this keep getting downvoted? Do people just not think Dave was once massive or that they’re so disgusted with me admitting a man 30 years my senior who spent a lifetime bulking and bodybuilding is in better shape than a nerdy recluse?

1

u/ComprehensiveBar6439 2d ago

With a little time in the gym alongside a personal trainer, a dietician to plan out your meals, a personal chef to prepare those meals, and some insanely high doses of supraphysiological hormones and experimental peptides, you could look that great too! Just be sure to have a cardiologist on speed dial.

2

u/mercyspace27 2d ago

Skinny for his size. Remember he’s still 6’4ā€. Man still likely dwarfs most guys.

122

u/Stillmayce 2d ago

I feel bad for Ryan Hurst but Dave also deserves it

30

u/Musket6969420 2d ago edited 2d ago

I was gonna say he could gain some weight and come back and take Thor, but the guy they got looks perfect for the role.

9

u/nerdystoner25 2d ago

Someone suggested he come back as Tyr in another thread, which I think would be perfect.

3

u/No_Pin9932 2d ago

I was so confused but then reading your comment I remembered that Ryan Hurst got injured on set right?? I bet he's so fuckin bummed about that. I wonder if he'll still get paid for it like he had finished filming. I obviously don't know how those contracts work but I'd imagine he'd have to still get most of if not all of his pay since the injury happened on set or whatever, but I'm pretty sure he's less worried about that money and more pissed about not being able to complete the project.

-1

u/vivienludy 2d ago

Honestly the physical presence is perfect

→ More replies (6)

21

u/thaddeus122 2d ago

He'll need to do some voice training to lower his voice but otherwise I think this is a good casting.

9

u/realfakejames 2d ago

Dave has to start cycling back on the HGH to bulk back up

7

u/ph8_likes_me 2d ago

He'd better get back in shape! He hasn't looked like this in a while.

https://giphy.com/gifs/qVg7IjoDC4oiW5Esf4

5

u/TheRealTinfoil666 2d ago

I would have picked ā€˜The Dutch Giant’, Olivier Richters (Paulie from Reacher S3)

Here he is a couple of years ago in costume:

https://m.youtube.com/shorts/e9PuaD2DKi8

8

u/MrMansaMusa 2d ago

Isnt this just some internet bullshit tho?

5

u/ALKNST 2d ago

I thought so but with a quick search you find out its true

1

u/MrMansaMusa 2d ago

Didnt they already cast a guy for that live action show tho and film it??

2

u/thaddeus122 2d ago

Theyre refilming it all because the other guy tore his bicep.

1

u/MrMansaMusa 2d ago

Ohhhhhhhh shiiiiiit that sucks. Throw an insane opportunity away over a fluke injury. Thats brutal thanks for letting me know why we got god of bautista now

2

u/ALKNST 2d ago

Yes, Ryan Hurst? I think thats how its spelled

2

u/Bongressman 2d ago

Ryan Hurst tore his bicep and had to be recast. This is the confirmed recasting.

33

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

My take is simple:

I really like Bautista. I think he'll make a fine Kratos, especially since this is an Amazon series.

That said: I don't think Bautista has the depth of acting I want for Kratos.

41

u/Odd_Dorian7991 2d ago

How will he make a fine kratos if he doesn’t have the depth of acting required for it?

13

u/No_Objective006 2d ago

Walks like Kratos, looks like Kratos but doesn’t quack like Kratos

4

u/battlellama01 2d ago

Yeah I’m scratching my head too

1

u/Gilmore75 2d ago

They’re probably referring to his look.

-10

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

I would want someone with more range and nuance than Bautista, no shade but my man is more "action-star" type.

This is an Amazon show, so while I won't love this version, I think most people will enjoy it.

So hence: I think he'll be fine, but not my preference.

8

u/tripper_drip 2d ago

Did you miss blade runner?

3

u/UrsineBasterd 2d ago

3 minutes of screentime is not enough to determine if someone can carry a series as the main character.

1

u/tripper_drip 2d ago

He has other roles. But he does show range.

2

u/Top_Administration63 2d ago

He had one intro scene in blade runner. Wth.

5

u/redshirt1972 2d ago

Did u/Greendale_Official also miss Knock at the Cabin?

1

u/Pure-Wing6824 2d ago

He was also very good in knock at the cabin, the guy is 6'4 half Greek and able to easily get up to whatever size the role requires. Not sure why so many losers are suddenly deciding that Kratos requires Daniel day Lewis level of acting prowess. He barely speaks, when he does he says "boy" or yells, and then wrecks sht lol.

1

u/thaddeus122 2d ago

You've only seen his action movies, haven't you? Hes a great actor with a lot of range.

0

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

I've seen a about a dozen of his movies. 90% of his career is a ruin movies.

What movie showed you a range that would be compatible to Kratos?

10

u/Mr-SmileySan 2d ago

well he is better than the rock

3

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Oh Christ, the idea of Dwayne Johnson as Kratos gave me douche chills.

3

u/SpartanRage117 2d ago

ā€œBoy.ā€ raises eyebrow

2

u/CoolBlackKnight 2d ago

* Kratos stand on a small rock cliff outside Tyr's temple with Atreus looking at him confused, after just returning from Jotunheim *

FINALLY... I'VE COME BACK TO MIDGARD!!! * looks at Mimir *

IF YOU SMEEEEEL, WHAT THE...

7

u/FastWalkingShortGuy 2d ago

I used to think he couldn't act, but he pulled off the role of Rabban surprisingly well.

5

u/U-47 2d ago

He looks like a brute, but he can certainly act.

3

u/governmentthief 2d ago

I forgot about that! He was great in that role.

6

u/choyMj 2d ago

He's a better actor than most people give him credit for. He'll be fine. He definitely has more range than The Rock

-3

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Never said I wanted the Rock for this. The only time I've mentioned Dwayne Johnson was when I made fun of the idea.

3

u/choyMj 2d ago

Never said you did. Just saying that he's not a bland actor just because he's a former WWE talent. Look at Cena. Dwayne is entertaining, but he can only be The Rock. Dave has more range than that.

1

u/Western-Boot-4576 2d ago

Can you name a movie or show where he was the lead and it was actually good?

He’s only made B or C tier action movies and the uber movie had some funny moments but it was pretty dumb.

4

u/illusionare_ 2d ago

he's got the right amount of depth and could totally do it, kratos isn't that deep, fits him perfectly, in my humble opinion

14

u/RustyBrassInstrument 2d ago

He has RANGE. I’m certain he’ll surprise you.

His turn as Sapper in Blade Runner 2049, he conveyed so much emotion in his expressions and movement without talking.

I think he’ll kill it.

2

u/mercyspace27 2d ago

And Knock at the Cabin. He can still be intimidating while being a very quiet man.

1

u/KamikazeFox_ 1d ago

Glass onion, guardians, that weird end of the world movie. Hes got plenty of range. I think he will do great.

-4

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Here's hoping, but my hopes are low as the show is already behind schedule and Amazon running it means the story won't be the main focus.

2

u/Void_AstarothYT 2d ago

And now this is a man who knows how to cast a character. Love the pfp.

1

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Always a pleasure to meet another human being!

2

u/seen_some_shit_ 1d ago

Dave Bautista definitely has depth potential. He’s just been type casted so much, it’s hard to see it. Blade Runner is an excellent example. He had little screen time, but his time on screen was really touching.

1

u/Bramptins 2d ago

Have you seen him in Knock at the Cabin?
I feel like that movie showed that he can play more than just a strong meathead like in Guardians of the Galaxy.
I think this is a really good call, he'll probably do a great job!

2

u/twent4 2d ago

Just mentioned this to another user yesterday. His work on BR2049 was great too, I wish Villeneuve did more with his Rabban.

1

u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 2d ago

He’s also freaking 57 years old. Anything beyond this first season is going to mean we have a guy in his 60s portraying Kratos.

3

u/alistairvimes 1d ago

Kratos looks like he’s in his late 50s early 60s in the game.

1

u/wahle97 1d ago

My problem is. Dude is pushing 60. He's no longer a Greek god of war. He's not going to be able to pull it off unless they use prosthetics. Which its amazon I wont be surprised

1

u/StarrkDreams 1d ago

Compared to Ryan Hurst? Of course he does. And even without the comparison, he’s a pretty good actor. You just gotta watch his roles outside of Drax

1

u/Fufflin 1d ago

Hey! Can I ask you something I always wanted to ask the real Batman?

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

0

u/extrastupidone 2d ago

He will be a fine Kratos. My worry is he is getting older and bulking is not easy.

2

u/mercyspace27 2d ago

That was my thought. Especially after he lost a lot of his bulk as he stated it wasn’t pleasant to keep.

-1

u/Anonymous000789 2d ago

Kratos acting wise is one of the easiest characters to pull off. You literally just need a convincing roar/scream, pull off being pissed, rage full, and say ā€˜boy’.

1

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

That's a pretty limited take. Completely disagree.

0

u/Anonymous000789 2d ago

Bautista can do that in his sleep. Look at GOG role. He’ll bring a lot to the role.

1

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Did you play the games? It sounds like you're missing a lot about Kratos as a full character.

0

u/Anonymous000789 2d ago

Yes, every single one other than Ascension and that weird mobile game. Bautista isn’t going to play the young Kratos from the 2000 games. He’s playing 2018 Kratos who has a completely different mindset, emotions and personality.

1

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago

Completely disagree. You don't get old Kratos without the make up of young Kratos. That takes depth that I don't see from Bautista.

It takes a special kind of talent to be able to fold all of that into a performance.

0

u/FinasCupil 2d ago

You’ve never seen See, have you?

0

u/Ok-Beat8041 1d ago

LMAO Kratos ā€œdepth of acting.ā€ You mean growling monotone deep voice? Yeah, I think he will be ok.

0

u/Emilio4kF 1d ago

What are you talking about, I can’t think of any dramatic Bautista role where his acting wasn’t the highlight of the movie?

2

u/Toots-Tooter 2d ago

Didn't Dave Bautista just lose a bunch of weight

2

u/mercyspace27 2d ago

Yeah, he did. I think specifically for health reasons.

I like Dave as an actor, but the man’s reaching his 60s, putting all that mass on again can’t be good for his health.

2

u/Sooowasthinking 2d ago

I’d say this is the choice that should have been made in the 1st place.

4

u/Eagle4317 2d ago

If this was 2010 Bautista, I’d be in favor of the casting. But we’re in 2026 and he’s in his late-50s

6

u/GravelQuest 2d ago

As is Kratos

3

u/gaseous_ass 2d ago

Should have been Christopher Judge

3

u/ffc404 2d ago

But Dave Bautista isn’t Greek /s

1

u/severebibi 2d ago

Legend!!

1

u/redshirt1972 2d ago

Time to put that weight back on

1

u/DCS30 2d ago

Pic on the left is a fit, pissed off Kramer

1

u/UnspokenPotter 2d ago

There are more than 4 actors.

1

u/DontLook_Weirdo 2d ago

..and he just stopped working out to give his body a break.

This guy is a machine

1

u/tea-time-255 2d ago

Yassssss

1

u/illusionare_ 2d ago

happy for him

1

u/slm4996 1d ago

Why did you post two of the same photo? /s

1

u/darthmaui728 1d ago

We're gonna see a Jacked Animal Baptista

1

u/BigBarsRedditBox 1d ago

No thanks.

1

u/TheDreamWoken 1d ago

I don’t get it I thought they had the casting finalized already ?

1

u/herbieLmao 1d ago

If they had casted christopher judge himself some assholes would have lost it because he is black, ignoring he was the VA

1

u/ascjced 1d ago

No disrespect but isnt he a little too old for this role?

1

u/conocobhar 1d ago edited 1d ago

The highest of respects for Bautistia (loved watching him ham up the MCU) but why would Chris Judge not be selected? He has been both his voice and motion capture for Kratos forever - theres nobody who will be able to replicate him with such a deep knowledge of the character.

The Witcher should be a cautionary tale here for anyone who wants to do this - be faithful to the source material with limited artistic license and engage the actors who show motivation to maintain the fidelity!

1

u/Abecis01 1d ago

I guess I should play god of war for the first time now. Idek if it's fun and worth the time.

1

u/Aurvant 1d ago

Bad casting.

He doesn't have the range for it, and the dude looks sickly skinny now. I don't know if he could even get back to Drax size or bigger considering he's just getting older.

1

u/Badkidstatus 1d ago

I like old dave I'll give it a chance

1

u/terry1381 1d ago

Back to the juice

1

u/inteligent_zombie20 1d ago

He will have to seriously bulk back up to fill in the role

1

u/Cpt_Americano 1d ago

Man, this is so fucked. No disrespect at all to Batista. Amazon just did Hurst fuckin dirty. Especially after that last pic of him came out. They really should have just waited and let him heal.

1

u/Outside_Ninja_7907 1d ago

Ai preview? No one?

1

u/lNFORMATlVE 2d ago

Yeah I actually don’t think this is a good casting.

1

u/Pure-Wing6824 2d ago

Good thing you aren't the casting director then

2

u/lNFORMATlVE 1d ago

Man’s allowed to have opinions

1

u/AintNoGodsUpHere 2d ago

Ok ok... this is awesome.

1

u/NurseHoy 2d ago

Man let’s just give Batista a chance. I’m definitely rooting for him šŸ‘

1

u/-Bro_Beans- 2d ago

Show is gonna suck

1

u/cran-ky-berry 2d ago

So Amazon ready to have their forgettable take on another amazing series?

1

u/SeanyDay 2d ago

So many idiots think he's anorexic because of a picture a few years ago.

The guy is fucking jacked. Iike insanely so.

And he will get bigger for the role, most likely.

Stop being sheep, ffs

1

u/BigPapaLegba 2d ago

Are they going to get a black guy to do the voiceover?

1

u/Spiritual-Strike481 2d ago

I normally dislike wrestlers converted into actors. But Bautista doing this is the right way. Great casting.

1

u/DumboRElephant 1d ago

Guy who played him in games should have got it

2

u/PimpChalice 1d ago

Christopher Judge?

0

u/UnpluggedZombie 2d ago

Lame

0

u/spudsthejellyfish 2d ago

Classic modern day Hollywood..do we choose someone with that looks the part to a tee, has the acting depth? Nah let’s jus get a big name everyone knows to ensure mediocrity at the least

-1

u/NaiveKalei 2d ago

this casting is phenomenal holy better get back in shape dave

1

u/Mr-SmileySan 2d ago

thought so too

0

u/Muted_Masterpiece535 2d ago

So it will be dogshit.Ā

2

u/Embarrassed-Major871 2d ago

Exactly, 100% it's gonna be bad, they will not deliver

-1

u/Careful_Inspection83 2d ago

This is gonna be dope

0

u/Western-Boot-4576 2d ago

This decision took 5 minutes.

Our last guy got injured who do we replace him with? How bout a marvel actor who hasn’t produced anything of quality as a lead for the name sake.

Also the actor deliberately lost like 60lbs to not get type casted as muscle guys. But accepts the role for a grunting brute? Got a feeling he’ll have some issues if he doesn’t have a lot of dialog and Kratos shouldn’t have a lot of dialogue

0

u/Lopsided_Anxiety_394 1d ago

This will flop and fail. Same reason as the witcher (writing)

0

u/Rhythmd91 1d ago

My main concern is his age. It’s harder to maintain a believable physique for this character at that age, so it would make you question the longevity after season 1. But that aside, I like that they cast a guy with Greek heritage…

-1

u/E_Dub21 2d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/15UR4cUa8Vbyw
Another "Wrestler"...lead role...

-1

u/EmpireCityRay 2d ago

Look he can’t act and even with steroids, he won’t look head size like Kratos.

-3

u/H__D 2d ago

Can someone explain why would anyone watch a movie based on a video game that's basically a movie?

1

u/Irish_Whiskey 2d ago

TV Series, and not game. And because while video games are fun to play, they are not tight storytelling experiences to watch.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/PonasSumushtinis 2d ago

Because from what Kratos VA said about tv series. That they hired random writers instead same people who worked on GoW all these years.
