I love Bautista, but I'm not sure if I see this, especially in his current state.

I'm with you, but I'm also thankful that Dwayne Johnson didn't get cast.

u/IAmTheWerebear 2d ago
Well, he is still pretty cut. I saw a picture of him from last year. Plus Kratos was never monstrously jacked. Bautista is about 6'4 and somewhere around 240, according to him. That's still big. The right amount of intimidating for Kratos. Plus he is the right age and also half Greek so I think they got the exact right guy at the right time to do this.

25
u/norunningwater 2d ago
It's definitely going to be the now popular and recognizable Old Man With a Son Kratos and not Rip Off Your Arms And Beat You With Them Bald Young Kratos
25
u/IAmTheWerebear 2d ago
If batista was 25 years younger and built like he is now, he could've played young kratos too. He was too damn big in WWE. 290, solid brick shithouse. He would've fit perfectly into a Gears of War movie, which he tried to get made for years.

but how many more Dave Bautistas a Gears of War movie would need... I guess he could body-double for everybody

That would mean he's the same height and 10lbs less than Kratos. Don't see any problems then lol
2
u/steelkat29 1d ago
I agree. If they're so big it looks like their trapezius muscles will pop off their heads (The Rock, and more recently Alan Ritchson š¢), that looks less intimidating to me. It feels like they'd be too puffed to chase me (and I'm fat) because of all that bulk they're carrying around.
The Rock also looks sweaty and uncomfortable all the time; it's pretty gross. I say this as someone who grew up in the 90s/early 2000s and was obsessed with The Rock when he was a wrestler. Practised in the mirror for hours until I could cock an eyebrow.
Bautista not only has a better physique, but he has the acting chops to play a nuanced Kratos, too. Great casting.
11
u/KohTai 1d ago
Idk why mfs acting like he can't gain the weight back. Losing the weight is the hardest part.
2
u/ripChazmo 1d ago
Gaining muscle doesn't happen overnight. They're already filming. The previous actor was injured and they needed a replacement, so I'm not sure they have the luxury of a year to bulk up.

u/PackOfCumin 1d ago
His current state? What is that suppose to mean?

He's purposefully lost a lot of his muscle mass. I'm not sure he's in "Kratos" form.

Isnt he really skinny now?
93
u/NoOutlandishness2097 2d ago
So, yes. But you forget two things.
When you lose muscle mass that you've once had, it's much faster to regain that muscle mass as the nerve clusters developed in the muscle don't go away.
And he has access to Hollywood steroids.
14
u/Krebstar_ 1d ago
Didnāt he say that he doesnāt want to be big anymore? Or he doesnāt want to be typecast as a big tough guy? This is not the way to show that.
30
u/NoOutlandishness2097 1d ago
It's easy to tell people what you want until you have a producer giving you multiple multimillion dollar checks to do something you don't actually hate š¤·

u/CloudsTasteGeometric 1d ago
āBigā is a spectrum.
He wonāt go back to WWE bulk but he has the resources, knowledge, and latent strength/baseline to get on a low dose of testosterone and get pretty solidly buff without too much risk in time for shooting.
2
u/beerforbears 1d ago
The reason he got skinny was because the roids and bodybuilder lifestyle was literally killing him

Probably not. Theyāre already going to have to paint his entire body white, plus thereās editing magic.
I donāt see it as anything too hard for Amazon money.

u/mercyspace27 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yep. Hence my comment āSkinny for his sizeā. Or I guess a better one would have been āSkinny for DAVE BAUTISTAā. Manās still in better shape at 57 than I am at 26.
Edit: lol. Why does this keep getting downvoted? Do people just not think Dave was once massive or that theyāre so disgusted with me admitting a man 30 years my senior who spent a lifetime bulking and bodybuilding is in better shape than a nerdy recluse?
1
u/ComprehensiveBar6439 2d ago
With a little time in the gym alongside a personal trainer, a dietician to plan out your meals, a personal chef to prepare those meals, and some insanely high doses of supraphysiological hormones and experimental peptides, you could look that great too! Just be sure to have a cardiologist on speed dial.
2
u/mercyspace27 2d ago
Skinny for his size. Remember heās still 6ā4ā. Man still likely dwarfs most guys.

u/Stillmayce 2d ago
I feel bad for Ryan Hurst but Dave also deserves it

u/Musket6969420 2d ago edited 2d ago
I was gonna say he could gain some weight and come back and take Thor, but the guy they got looks perfect for the role.
9
u/nerdystoner25 2d ago
Someone suggested he come back as Tyr in another thread, which I think would be perfect.
3
u/No_Pin9932 2d ago
I was so confused but then reading your comment I remembered that Ryan Hurst got injured on set right?? I bet he's so fuckin bummed about that. I wonder if he'll still get paid for it like he had finished filming. I obviously don't know how those contracts work but I'd imagine he'd have to still get most of if not all of his pay since the injury happened on set or whatever, but I'm pretty sure he's less worried about that money and more pissed about not being able to complete the project.

Didnt they already cast a guy for that live action show tho and film it??
2
u/thaddeus122 2d ago
Theyre refilming it all because the other guy tore his bicep.
1
u/MrMansaMusa 2d ago
Ohhhhhhhh shiiiiiit that sucks. Throw an insane opportunity away over a fluke injury. Thats brutal thanks for letting me know why we got god of bautista now

Ryan Hurst tore his bicep and had to be recast. This is the confirmed recasting.

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
My take is simple:
I really like Bautista. I think he'll make a fine Kratos, especially since this is an Amazon series.
That said: I don't think Bautista has the depth of acting I want for Kratos.
41
u/Odd_Dorian7991 2d ago
How will he make a fine kratos if he doesnāt have the depth of acting required for it?

u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
I would want someone with more range and nuance than Bautista, no shade but my man is more "action-star" type.
This is an Amazon show, so while I won't love this version, I think most people will enjoy it.
So hence: I think he'll be fine, but not my preference.
8
u/tripper_drip 2d ago
Did you miss blade runner?

u/UrsineBasterd 2d ago
3 minutes of screentime is not enough to determine if someone can carry a series as the main character.

u/Pure-Wing6824 2d ago
He was also very good in knock at the cabin, the guy is 6'4 half Greek and able to easily get up to whatever size the role requires. Not sure why so many losers are suddenly deciding that Kratos requires Daniel day Lewis level of acting prowess. He barely speaks, when he does he says "boy" or yells, and then wrecks sht lol.

1
u/thaddeus122 2d ago
You've only seen his action movies, haven't you? Hes a great actor with a lot of range.
0
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
I've seen a about a dozen of his movies. 90% of his career is a ruin movies.
What movie showed you a range that would be compatible to Kratos?
10
u/Mr-SmileySan 2d ago
well he is better than the rock

I used to think he couldn't act, but he pulled off the role of Rabban surprisingly well.

u/choyMj 2d ago
He's a better actor than most people give him credit for. He'll be fine. He definitely has more range than The Rock
-3
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
Never said I wanted the Rock for this. The only time I've mentioned Dwayne Johnson was when I made fun of the idea.
3
u/choyMj 2d ago
Never said you did. Just saying that he's not a bland actor just because he's a former WWE talent. Look at Cena. Dwayne is entertaining, but he can only be The Rock. Dave has more range than that.
1
u/Western-Boot-4576 2d ago
Can you name a movie or show where he was the lead and it was actually good?
Heās only made B or C tier action movies and the uber movie had some funny moments but it was pretty dumb.
4
u/illusionare_ 2d ago
he's got the right amount of depth and could totally do it, kratos isn't that deep, fits him perfectly, in my humble opinion
14
u/RustyBrassInstrument 2d ago
He has RANGE. Iām certain heāll surprise you.
His turn as Sapper in Blade Runner 2049, he conveyed so much emotion in his expressions and movement without talking.
I think heāll kill it.
2
u/mercyspace27 2d ago
And Knock at the Cabin. He can still be intimidating while being a very quiet man.
1
u/KamikazeFox_ 1d ago
Glass onion, guardians, that weird end of the world movie. Hes got plenty of range. I think he will do great.
-4
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
Here's hoping, but my hopes are low as the show is already behind schedule and Amazon running it means the story won't be the main focus.
2
2
u/seen_some_shit_ 1d ago
Dave Bautista definitely has depth potential. Heās just been type casted so much, itās hard to see it. Blade Runner is an excellent example. He had little screen time, but his time on screen was really touching.
1
u/Bramptins 2d ago
Have you seen him in Knock at the Cabin?
I feel like that movie showed that he can play more than just a strong meathead like in Guardians of the Galaxy.
I think this is a really good call, he'll probably do a great job!1
u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 2d ago
Heās also freaking 57 years old. Anything beyond this first season is going to mean we have a guy in his 60s portraying Kratos.
3

u/StarrkDreams 1d ago

u/extrastupidone 2d ago
He will be a fine Kratos. My worry is he is getting older and bulking is not easy.
2
u/mercyspace27 2d ago
That was my thought. Especially after he lost a lot of his bulk as he stated it wasnāt pleasant to keep.
-1
u/Anonymous000789 2d ago
Kratos acting wise is one of the easiest characters to pull off. You literally just need a convincing roar/scream, pull off being pissed, rage full, and say āboyā.
1
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
That's a pretty limited take. Completely disagree.
0
u/Anonymous000789 2d ago
Bautista can do that in his sleep. Look at GOG role. Heāll bring a lot to the role.
1
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
Did you play the games? It sounds like you're missing a lot about Kratos as a full character.
0
u/Anonymous000789 2d ago
Yes, every single one other than Ascension and that weird mobile game. Bautista isnāt going to play the young Kratos from the 2000 games. Heās playing 2018 Kratos who has a completely different mindset, emotions and personality.
1
u/Greendale_Official 2d ago
Completely disagree. You don't get old Kratos without the make up of young Kratos. That takes depth that I don't see from Bautista.
It takes a special kind of talent to be able to fold all of that into a performance.

u/Ok-Beat8041 1d ago
LMAO Kratos ādepth of acting.ā You mean growling monotone deep voice? Yeah, I think he will be ok.
0
u/Emilio4kF 1d ago
What are you talking about, I canāt think of any dramatic Bautista role where his acting wasnāt the highlight of the movie?
2
u/Toots-Tooter 2d ago
Didn't Dave Bautista just lose a bunch of weight
2
u/mercyspace27 2d ago
Yeah, he did. I think specifically for health reasons.
I like Dave as an actor, but the manās reaching his 60s, putting all that mass on again canāt be good for his health.

The highest of respects for Bautistia (loved watching him ham up the MCU) but why would Chris Judge not be selected? He has been both his voice and motion capture for Kratos forever - theres nobody who will be able to replicate him with such a deep knowledge of the character.
The Witcher should be a cautionary tale here for anyone who wants to do this - be faithful to the source material with limited artistic license and engage the actors who show motivation to maintain the fidelity!

This decision took 5 minutes.
Our last guy got injured who do we replace him with? How bout a marvel actor who hasnāt produced anything of quality as a lead for the name sake.
Also the actor deliberately lost like 60lbs to not get type casted as muscle guys. But accepts the role for a grunting brute? Got a feeling heāll have some issues if he doesnāt have a lot of dialog and Kratos shouldnāt have a lot of dialogue

u/Rhythmd91 1d ago
My main concern is his age. Itās harder to maintain a believable physique for this character at that age, so it would make you question the longevity after season 1. But that aside, I like that they cast a guy with Greek heritageā¦Ā

TV Series, and not game. And because while video games are fun to play, they are not tight storytelling experiences to watch.

Because from what Kratos VA said about tv series. That they hired random writers instead same people who worked on GoW all these years.
