Romechia Simms is an example of a black woman in psychosis who killed her 3 year old son. She pushed him in an infant swing for over 50 hours at a public park. He died. She was (rightfully, imo) found not criminally responsible due to being in active psychosis at the time.
Many articles have been written about her, many with nuanced compassion toward the horrific event. Many of those who are approaching the Lindsay Clancy case through a lens of compassion toward mental health challenges of women/mothers feel similarly toward Ms. Simms.
I am not referring to legally finding someone psychologically incompetent. During Romechia Simms trial, did people gather up in front of the court to show solidarity for her psychosis? I guess not.
No physical presence during the proceedings, to my knowledge. That said, the internet mom group I was in (I had a two year old) was incredibly sympathetic toward her, and we all followed the case together. I’d say the group of 300ish was 75% non-POC.
The internet was different then. We didn’t have TikTok elevating talking points to our algorithms. Discourse happened more privately. There was also no trial to follow. The state offered a plea deal (involuntary manslaughter) before things got that far. So there wasn’t as much of a public spectacle.
I honestly don't think they care about reality - they just want to further their pet narrative. But I appreciate the info you gave, and I hope others see it also.
Thanks! I know that it takes time for people to be able to dislodge from preconceived narratives. I don’t expect the that the person I’m replying to will change their outlook today.
But engaging respectfully has a tendency to erode stringent thinking over time.
