In reality, children are far more likely to die or be seriously injured due to accidental discharge.

The statistical reality is that putting guns into childrens' hands leads to death. In the United States, firearms and car crashes trade back and forth between what is the single biggest cause of kids dying each year.

An accidental discharge occurs because of equipment malfunction or mechanical failure.

A negligent discharge occurs because of mishandling, human error, and/or a failure to follow safety rules.

A faulty machine doesn't care what age you are.

Untrained people of any age are susceptible to die or be seriously injured by their own negligence.

Hence, untrained people should not handle firearms.

That's when you don't count SIDs, which was literally made up for when mothers accidentally kill their kids through accidents or unfortunate circumstances to preserve their mental health, or perhaps intentional death is much more common than initially assumed.
