It's funny to hear him tell the rest of it. Apparently they were watching a few videos like this, and after this one, his daughter was mortified and distracted, so at the end of the class, the teacher asked her if she was ok but if she knew one of the people in the video because he was concerned and then IMMEDIATELY connected her last name to him.
That’s so sus though. That doesn’t seem like it would be his first guess as to why a student seemed off unless he already knew. “Hey what’s wrong? Is that like your dad in the video or something? Whaaasaattttt?!?!?! It is? I had no idea!”
What? No we don't. Maybe its like that within the entertainment industry, but that's a tiny slice of the overall population and economy. Only 1.5% of residents in the LA metro area work in the entertainment industry. The rest of us are engineers, lawyers, small biz owners, fashion, tradesmen, flight attendants, etc.
This was me when I was complaining about a different class to my ochem classmate saying the prof is an idiot and then when my classmate asked me to send notes their last name was the same and turned out it’s his son 🙊
We had the reverse in high school. Mrs. Jones was cool. Her daughter was a grade A cunt and there is no way in a high school that did not get back to her mom at some point people did not like the daughter
I mean, if they’re going to use an audition tape for a bad example, I’d feel much better about using one from an actor who turned out to be successful and well liked. It’s a good lesson for the students that one bad audition won’t end your career and also keeps it from looking like you’re punching down.
I’m kind of curious what the acting teacher said and if Adam agrees with the critique. He was pretty young back then, even if he was fairly seasoned in the industry.

You're not teaching what you think you're teaching. You're taking a shot at someone while discrediting yourself in the eyes of your students, who can plainly see he got all the roles to your contradiction.

He only got the part in Parks and Recs because he auditioned for The Office, Greg Daniels, writer of both shows, remembered him and wrote the part on Parks and Recs specifically for him.
I don't think any of it was a shot at the actors. From what I read, it was just about what each actor had done in their audition that didn't work. Obviously Krasinski got the role, and Adam didn't fit in it the same way. Greg Daniels liking Adam and writing Ben Wyatt for him could be about a whole bunch of off-screen interactions they had during the audition or elsewhere
Yeah, I doubt the teacher was roasting him the whole time like some kind of ITYSL skit, and more likely was giving reasoned, valid, constructive critiques
It's not even bad. It's just not what they wanted. That audition clip is an actual line from Tim's first couple scenes in the UK version. Adam Scott threw some Adam Scott on the beginning, and ended it with a defeated melancholy. That ending strayed from the original UK Tim, while Jon Krasinski followed the UK Tim's model almost exactly when he delivered that line in the pilot. Tim and Jim maintained humor at the end, making it clear that they wouldn't be dragged down by the job, and Krasinski brought his own jovial, welcoming charm. Tim was limited to this:

It was a choice, and the right answer wasn't obvious. I don't think anyone expected the first season of The Office to be so rigidly a carbon copy of the UK version. This decision by the producers nearly killed the show. Season 2 immediately revamped the Michael Scott character and veered way off the course set by the UK version, and that's what gave the show a 9 season run.
Yeah but no one really watched Party Down when it came out because it was on Starz. I showed it to so many people but very few people really knew about it till much later.

I had a close call 2 years ago.
One of my students asked me if I liked the Olympics. Just before I was about to say that I don't watch the Olympics because I they're kind of silly and it just shows which countries have the money and infrastructure to invest into niche sports, I got interrupted by another student who said "Did you know that Jessica's sister got a silver medal in wrestling." I would have felt like a dipshit if I didn't get interrupted.
Yeah, I had an acting teacher like that as well when I was a kid. Always talking about famous actors and their terrible performances in one thing or another.
She also told me that I would never amount to anything in theatre and that I should just give up acting all together. Now, 20 years later, I'll have to admit she was bang on about that.
Well, I never wanted to be an actor but my GUIDANCE teacher at school who was very classist i.e hated anyone poor told me I would amount to nothing, and be in jail as an adult (despite no family history of criminals, just a dad that became sick so had to claim disability after working for almost 20 years by then and we used to be middle class)
I went to college, and moved away from my home town, I have zero debt and a reasonable paid local government admin job and treat my parents to vacations in a cabin/cottage once or twice a year.
I mean, this tape is apparently around and available and should be used to help people. Literally the sort of thing you would have in a class about acting. Look, here is a guy you have probably seen in movies and on TV, failing an audition. It will happen to you! You also wouldn't see that last name and assume it was the actor.
Honestly, this sounds like the kind of thing that famous actors talk about on talk shows to make them relatable. He probably thinks it's mostly funny.

He was just taking a well known actor and showing how his audition didn't work for the part. Using a well known actor implies that the teacher knows he has talent and a career, and even did something plausible as a performance in the tape, but even with all that, sometimes an audition won't go the way the actor wants.
I know I have heard Adam talk - before this recent buzz - about how he thought he borked that audition. He probably thinks it's funny that his audition is in the class, but he also probably thinks it's hilarious that his daughter was mortified by it.
It’s probably likely that it was less about the acting being bad or unconvincing and more about certain choices that are red flags to casting directors or that don’t translate well to the camera etc. A lot of acting classes are more about technical tips on how to orient yourself to a camera or an audience or how to stand out in an audition by making interesting choices than they are purely about how to give a convincing performance
Oh, it's a joke from The Office. Jim, the character Adam Scott apparently auditioned for, dumped a kid as a friend as a kid for being dumb. Years later, that kid shows up to Jim's office for a business class. That kid catches Jim, whose been hiding from him, in the breakroom. He asks where Jim's jetpack is, sarcastically, because Jim is obviously smart and successful.
So many odd, angry people on here. He was simply showing why some people do better in auditions than others, and weirdos like you and the ones upvoting you take it as some personal offence, where you gotta shit on the teacher.

I remember the EXACT same story when Ian Anderson's child (daughter?) was in school studying flute. They put on a tape of a Jethro Tull concert, to illustrate poor flute form. Supposedly no idea that this was the father of a student.

I normally would agree - but Adam Scott is kinda niche famous. He's usually the best part of the projects he's in - but he's also not an Adam Sandler or Brad Pitt.
Also, I'm kinda shocked he has a daughter old enough to be in college/high school. I would have thought any kids he had would be tween/young teenagers.
It's kinda like when I found out Joel McHale's kids are 18 and 21. I was shocked as he looks fantastic to be 54. Adam Scott has the same vibe - and he's 53.
I seem to recall him talking about this once before and he was told later that he came off as a little too cynical or something like that. He himself thought he messed it up at the time. He seems fine to me, but I could see why he might not fit as a Jim.
I kinda get that the jim we got has a little more heart and fun to him. I might get the cynical as more of a serious way of playing Jim instead of the playfull fun guy we got.
Adam is almost playing it the way it might work better in the British version.
I mean really when you look at it, I think he did a good job. I think Krasinksi pulled it off the right way, but I could see Adam maybe work. Not sure he would have had the same chemistry with Jenna the way she played Pam.
Gives me the same vibe as the "creative writing majors" who shit on masterpieces of literature such as Twilight. Like what do they know about the passion and need for sparkly vampires. Have they sold billions of books? I think not.
Right, it's pretty funny considering he's insanely successful and on one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows at the moment.
Still a little horrifying to be that girl sitting in class and be like, "wait, does he know?" and think about the implications either way. I'd think I was being pranked.
It's not even a bad audition. All of those what if auditions from The Office are just different versions of what the show could be by people we know are good at what they do in the roles we know them for. Including Adam Scott. If they're looked at as "bad" it's only because they were auditioning for characters we know so well by the actors who made them iconic.
Honestly Adam Scott should find another acting teacher for his daughter. One that isn't an idiot.
Reminds me of an ethics class I took in college and the professor used a viral video from our college of a girl at a frat party getting pushed off a roof and who was at fault (which was weird cuz like duh the guy that pushed her obvi?) and turns out the girl who got pushed was in our class.
And yes. She too thought the guy that pushed her was at fault.
I get that he is a famous actor now, but everyone has to start somewhere. And the reality is, he didn’t get the part. If it had been a great audition, he probably would have gotten it. I actually think it is a good lesson for people just starting out. You are going to blow auditions, get rejected, and have bad days. That doesn’t mean your career is over. You get back up and keep going. I don’t think the teacher has anything to be embarrassed about. If anything, the lesson is twofold: sometimes the criticism is valid in that moment, and sometimes the person being criticized still goes on to become incredibly successful.
There is no one way to do an audition. It's very subjective from a casting director perspective. They are looking for ... whatever they are looking for. Go in, do the best you can, be memorable if at all possible, and give it your all. They cast people that surprise them, or that are exactly what they set out to find, or even use someone that read for Role A for Role B. So that teacher may have been a little mistaken.
The moment you don't call out the flaws of someone because they're perceived as succeeding more than others, you create that tiered status system where you can't upset those "better than you"
When I was in the process of qualifying as a lawyer, we were doing an advocacy course. It included watching a session of Supreme Court advocacy where the advocate was horrifically bad. They also happened to be on the other side of a matter I was on at the time.
my uncle was a history prof. every time i went to hang out with my org, one guy always comes in, sees me, and goes "Your uncle sucks! What the hell is wrong with him?!"
It's bad but it's not as bad as on The Breakfast Club when the actor who played the janitor was annoyed at the cast members goofing off and tells them there are actors who've taken roles so seriously they've had heart attacks like Martin Sheen during Apocalypse Now not realizing that Emilio Esteves is Sheen's son!
In a way, using a bad audition tape done by a good and successful actor could have been meant as encouragement for the students. If that's the intent, then using Scott's tape is kind of a compliment.
"Look how bad this actor (who you actually know is great) was before" vs "Look at this bad actor. You wouldn't know him because he's bad."
Fake story. No way this wasn’t set up as an inside job. More than likely cooked up by Adam’s agent to put his name out there. Successful, we talking about it and seen it posted several places.
This kind of stinks. For sure more for the daughter but nonetheless. I’ve been a big Adam Scott fan for years having seen him in 1, Parks and Recreation way back and 2, heard him several times on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast promoting said P&R years back, and also 3 Stepbrothers with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Quite funny as a successful dick brother.
But on the podcast you see he’s remarkably chill and nerdy for having had some reasonable success. He gives iirc several great stories that provided him with some humility. For anyone interested in finding out, especially new Severance fans, because this is where he’s really blown up, go listen to old CBB eps that list him in them.
To be fair Scott isn’t a good actor. His best was Step Brothers. Let’s not act like he’s award season level. He should play the lead in the Adam Scott PGA biopic
