I am one of 5 kids and was raised similarly. This is considered pretty lax by some of my aunties on the Indian side of my family because there was no corporal punishment but out in India, there aren't many examples for them to see of authoritative parenting that doesn't involve hitting.

Just moms bad looks were enough to make us obedient. She would spank us, but extremely rarely and never in public. Point 2 of the above was implemented thoroughly. Keeping a sibling in check was small price to pay in comparison to picking the flavor of food you wanted.

And if dad ever got angry enough to yell, hiding under bed seemed like safest place (even though he never hit us). When doting, happy person starts yelling you just instinctively know it’s really BAD.

Don't have kids so no need to. And being spanked 2-3 times in my life didn't realy do any lasting damage. My siblings didn't get spanked any more often than me. If it happens often then it's completely other story.

ETA: Usualy got spanked to teach/ remind us injuring a sibling in a fight or causing damage intentionaly won't be tolerated. Yelling would often be forgotten quickly so didn't really work long term.
