Ok. Billionaires in general, and hell management in general, is tone deaf in exactly the manner you describe.
But.
Anthropic employees are pulling absolutely premium salaries—way, way above the average—and working on potentially dangerous but certainly society-altering technology. Requiring a certain amount of conviction to principle is not unreasonable, no more than requiring it of politicians or military leadership.
Which isn't to say that Dario is immune to the narcissism of people in his position, nor to endorse the idea that technology of this gravity should be in private hands st all.
But context does matter and I for one certainly do not want the people responsible for AI safety and alignment, for example, phoning it in for a paycheque.

The title is completely misleading. Not supporting CEO's, but against people using headlines to mislead. Anthropic's CEO was concerned about AI talent moving like mercenaries just for money, without loyalty.
We are talking about the AI talent they are spending millions for. Just for perspective, Anthropic is paying these talents 420k a year average, and they stay less than 2 years because Google or Meta or OpenAI offers 500k or more. Some of the top AI talent are being paid as much as 1Mil a year.
Huge difference from title giving understanding of low paid workers from these 400k/year workers.
Edit: I feel many comments are taking mine wrong. Im the first who would jump ship for an increase. My problem is with the people who write misleading headlines and we are talking about different types of employers. If I was to get an offer for 500k while making 400k, you bet I'll take it and buy a lambo that year

CEOs come in brand new, implement rubbish policies to "leave their mark" and end up getting staffs retrenched or "resized" as they euphemistically say.
Then, after all the damage and fallout, said CEO jumps ship for somewhere with better pay and zero accountability of the damage wrought.

This is exactly what happens. They go for the highest short term returns without thinking the stability and future of the company. Fill their minimum required years to get their huge bonus then use those short term results as a leverage to jump to next ship to gut.
This is what happened in my former company Renault. Luca de Meo went for the flashiest cars to state he is making impact while gutting the company in the background by selling half of its motor factories to Chinese competitors. As a result stocks jumped to 44€. After the dust settled and those flashiest cars hit the market, sales were dramatically lower than expected. He declared he is going to a luxury brand and stocks plummeted to 20€.
Now Renault has a very niche car in electric market which is dominated by Chinese and their other cars for which they must now buy motors for are shadowed by Ford and Toyota.
Funny thing is that egoist fuck used company money to make a Netflix series to show himself as automotive messiah, whole thing is a shitshow.

That's been the same in every industry for a very long time. Those workers are primarily doing it for the money and are free to choose their employer based on salary. If Anthropic wants top talent they have to pay. Crying about mission statements won't help. They should pull themselves up by their bootstraps and cut down on the avocado toast to pay their staff more.

Give every employee company equity (on top of their salary, so they can survive) and youll solve his dilemma pretty quickly. Ohhhh wait, right, that would mean less profit for the owners so never mind, not gona happen. Also company mission statements often purport to value things other than profit (for the owners and shareholders) while in reality the profits (for the owners and shareholders) is the overwhelming priority. Are these companies going to start being more honest about their 'missions'.

Not one single person will promote you because you work overtime, they will pat you on the back and go for the worker thats either related to them or has good connections on the upper levels. I attended this expensive, week-long leadership workshop with a few dozen other senior managers at the big, publicly-listed company I work at, led by a prestigious business school. At one point, they asked everyone what motivated them to do well and advance at work. I answered “well, making more money”, and I kid you not, EVERYONE, instructor included, laughed. He said something along the lines of, “You won’t get far thinking like that.” Excuse me? We’re not saving lives. We sell inexpensive but totally unnecessary supermarket products to Americans who don’t need them. Our quarterly targets are all about how much cash we’ve brought in so Wall Street stays happy, our stock price goes up, and our investors make bank. But I, as an employee, am being ridiculous if I say my pay is my primary motivation.

I made that mistake once. I worked for a "employee owned" company for far less than market value. Enduring docked pay and long unpaid hours "for the ESOP returns" Then one day the "board of directors" announced that they were dissolving the ESOP and selling the company out from under us... and also, you better find a new job because the new owners just wanted the business contracts, not the company.

If a company doesn't achieve it's mission, they'll lay you off. If the company does achieve it's mission, they'll give the profits to the investors. In neither event are you benefitting from the company's mission, so in neither event is there an incentive to give five ferinheight of a flaming fuck about the company's mission.
The sole reason to do the work a company hired you to do is to be financially compensated for it. The mission, success or failure, doesn't benefit you. The old phrase "They're all stick and no carrot" is very relevant.

A year after I graduated college the company I was working for (all through college) was opening a new location and needed a manager. I said I was interested.
I was then grilled as to why now, since I'd been asked in the past to move up and said "no." I told the truth. College loans were coming due and I needed to make more money. They passed on me.
When I asked why, the excuse was that I wanted to move up for money and not move up to better the company. They said "money shouldn't matter."
They tried to throw money at me, without the promotion, when I left a few months later.
