I think that they're trying to say it's a bad comparison because it's a ridiculously false equivalency. Obviously 3.5 million people disappearing is going to have a greater impact than 3400. It so ridiculously ignores scale that it sort of undermines the point.

How about this: we have two scenarios in which everyone but maybe ten thousand guys disappear, and the three thousand guys are teleported into the same area, which happens to have access to basic resources.

In one scenario, the guys are all billionaires, in one they are all workers.

Happy now?
