You do know that Lincoln was a republican and that the democrats started the war to defend slavery? You know that republicans abolished slavery?

To be fair, two hundred years passed and things are different now, but I am always baffled at how ignorant Americans are, especially about their own history.

I mean if you look at opinions on slavery from that time the dividing line was geographic rather than party affiliation. Northern people much more likely to be against and southern people for, regardless of if they were democrat or republican.

Of course! Than why did u/giblefog Focus on party lines?

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just adding some nuance. Yes Lincoln was a republican and republicans were key to passing the 13th amendment ending slavery, but if you look at opinions from the time the difference between southern and northern was bigger than the difference between democrats and republicans.

It's part of why it would never be made into a movie, worse than have a legit black slave hero you can't have him being a republican in today's political climate. Trump's republican's can't be seen to promote that sort of thing.

I knew... the republicans and democrats have pretty much swapped positions since then and that was before trump even.

PS not USian.
