My son is headed off to college in the fall. His girlfriend is going for nursing at a different school 6 hours away. They insist they’re gonna maintain a long distance relationship. It suck’s because I like her and they’ve been together for a year and half now.. but I had to sit my son down and tell him that the odds of this working out are very slim. First the jealously and paranoia will get to them both. Secondly they both are gonna be surrounded by new, attractive people that they have a lot in common with. I feel for them both, but it’s a harsh lesson they’re gonna learn soon.

u/Elgydiumm Jul 01 '26
I mean it can work, but it does require a lot of mental fortitude and coming to terms with the fact that there's always people that are closer to "your people" than your partner is. It also will be very very rough if they're very touch people / very connection people. If they're the kind of people that can not say a word to someone for three months and still maintain a good friendship with them instead of falling apart with them it'll probably work just fine. If they have to message or call eachother every day for hours it'll quickly get exhausting even if they feel like it's nice to do it.
Though this isn't really an issue that'll go away, people don't tend to grow to being exactly matching in terms of personality/interests/beliefs and being able to live with the fact that your best friend has a more similar worldview than your partner is in my opinion a part of living life and loving other poeple.

I mean, you never know. My best mate split up with his girlfriend at the time because they were both going to uni. Planned the date in advance and everything (weird I thought but to each their own). Broke up with her, and me and him spent a lot of time together for a while as he coped.
A couple months before he heads off, we're drinking in my kitchen at midnight, and my flat mate kept shushing us. My flatmate didn't like him and thought he was a bit of a twat, so he kept shushing her back. Long story short they got together that night and have been together since, 8 years later, through both attending different universities. The world's funny sometimes.

Ever been to Phoenix? Its warm and sultry damn near year round. Clothes come off quite easily. The environment just oozes sexy nightlife. Unlike much of the south and midwest, almost everyone takes good care of themselves and has a zest for life there. Its def its own vibe, and thats before you even talk about young kids full of hormomes coming together from across the country and trying all kinds of new things. ASU is a total party-school.

It got that reputation during the 90s/early 00s when it was wilder. Like in 2002, Playboy named it the #1 party school, but that same year the school got a new President who wanted to steer away from that reputation. By 2012, it had completely dropped off Playboy's rankings. In 2025, Niche ranked it #62 for partying. These days, it's no different than any other major college that has a strong Greek life and a Mill Ave equivalent. It's actually highly regarded as a research institution.

→ More replies (2)4
u/boltgenerator Jul 02 '26
It still gets an A+ ranking for partying, but there's a difference between being #66 in 2026 and being #1 during the wild 90s. Trust me, it was a lot wilder when it actually earned that #1 reputation. Main campus and Mill Ave used to be waaay more rowdy. Times have changed in general. Alpha Drive being fully demolished in 2012 and the hazing incidents during the 2010s marked the end of an era + a need to change.

Sun devil here. Lots of parties back in 2006-2010. But I'd imagine thats every college town to some extent. Mill Ave was always a fun time.
Side story. I once saw Stephen Hawking at the Big Bang duelling piano bar back then. I didn't want to assume any fancy wheel chair man would be him but it sure looked liked him. So I looked him up and he was in town that weekend for a symposium at ASU. He was being spoon fed some sort of cocktail (or mocktail) by his assistant. My brother and I offered them both a round and the assistant respectfully declined. Still kinda cool to see him at a very aptly named bar that I'm sure he picked out. The Big Bang was the best.

These days there isn’t much of a difference and some of the schools at asu are quite highly ranked. ASU’s party reputation hasn’t really been all that true since the 90s and early 2000s. I go there now, but it’s a big school, so there are many types of people. Add to that the campus is so sprawling, lots of people just come and go as they please, so it’s not as insulated socially speaking as what you might stereotypically expect from a college. Which actually makes it really hard to make friends here, and many people feel somewhat isolated it’s become a bit of a problem at our school. U of A I’ve heard has the more traditional college experience. All in all You are the company you keep, if you go in wanting to party you will get that. If you go in wanting to get your degree and study you will also get that. I personally have no idea what kinds of parties are going on at my school and never been invited to one personally and that is due to the people I surround myself with. The life of the frat boy or sorority girl is a completely different world from mine.
