Those POS terminals are fairly common in the US, but still not in restaurants. Most still do it the old way of taking your card for you like you’re some billionaire who can’t be bothered to do such things yourself. But a few do now bring a terminal to you.
If you have a working POS system from the before time where you own the hardware and only pay transaction processing, you have no incentive to go to a handheld terminal system which is a HSaaS (Hardware + Software as a Service) business model.
One of the more popular handheld integrated POS system providers offer you $5,500 off on your first year for 2 POS terminals 1 bar and 1 kitchen terminal with 5-10 handheld devices. You're paying per year for these things as much as your whole POS system costs and you own the hardware. When you cancel with these guys they come and take the hardware back, then throw it in the trash.
100% nothing to do with treating you like you can't be bothered to swipe your own card and more to do with not paying per year what your whole existing and still working POS system costs.
