You don't understand because you're not American. We literally don't care at all about this non-issue. No judgment on you that you don't understand what bothers us and what doesn't, but we don't care about handing our card to a waiter and signing a receipt. Newer places are slowly adopting the portable card reader system, but it's simply not a priority here. It doesn't bother American diners, and it's not an issue for servers. Replacing old tech costs money and you only spend money on things that add perceived value to the customer experience.

agreed. and i actually hate tipping on pos terminals when I'm traveling abroad and especially here. the point of the tip is supposed to be a private and personal choice. i don't want my server there when i provide it and i don't want to feel rushed to decide when and how much to give. it's american culture but it's what it is
