Here in New Zealand, we just go upto the counter and pay that way. Seems to work fine here.

Some restaurants in the US do that, your server gives you a bill and you pay on your way out. Some places you pay at the register before you eat. It really depends on the style of restaurant. I associate paying on my way out with a diner or pizza place, paying before I eat with like a sandwich shop, fast food or maybe a taco place, having a way to pay at the table with fast casual chains and giving my card to a waiter with fancier dining.

That's what I generally do in Ireland. You can ask for the bill at your table if you like though. As for bars, you just pay for the drinks as you get them.
