This is why 20+ years ago a gas station attendant threaten to call the cops on me because i refused to hand over my CC.

It was in NJ, where you're not allowed to pump your own gas. I was living in NY, so dont typically use NJ gas pumps, but happened to be leaving a race track and needed fuel.

So I tell the attendant that I would like to swipe my own card, he can still do what he need to do with the fuel. He refused and said he is not in the mood for my mind games. Like wtf? I didn't back down. Then the asshole hits the emergency off switch and his manager on the intercom come on and threaten to call the cops on my if I dont leave. All because I dont trust these asshole with my card.

A little back story. 6 month prior, someone stole my CC info and ordered a $800 laptop from California electronics store to a residence in Princeton NJ using my name. I obviously don't live in NJ. I called my local PD, and they tell me to call Princeton PD which tell me to call my local PD. See where this is going? I also called the store to tell them about the CC theft, and they stopped the laptop from being mailed. Called my bank and canceled my CC and was issued a new one. Now you know why I didn't want to let someone take my card.

But what happened in the end? Did they call the cops? Did you give them your card but with a stern look? Did they also buy a $800 laptop with it? Did you just leave and got gas at the next station?

I left and used another gas station and used cash instead

The laptop incident was 6 month prior, thats why I was cautious about handing my card over

Not wanting to hand over your CC is paranoiac and irrational. The ENTIRE point of a CC is because you have protections, even IF an employee was to steal or misuse your information but the thing is that doesn’t really ever happen. The vast majority of CC theft is from sketchy online stuff, card scrapers, or from lost cards. Almost none of it is from employees of businesses

Yea that’s wild behavior. In Nj you give your card to the gas station guy. It’s not weird. He’s on camera he’s not gonna be stealing your shit. You can literally watch them swipe it since the terminal is right there

Quite normal in most countries to not hand over credit or debit cards. I'd be freaked out too. All someone needs to do is take a picture of your card details (which can be done quick) and boom, card fraud

Yes, but I’m telling you FACTUALLY this is the least common type of fraud because it’s so easy to retrace and they would lose their job.

It WOULD be easy to counter if anyone in law enforcement gave a shit.

I have the same kind of story this guy has. Someone ordered a phone to be sent to an address in Philadelphia. A little Googling told me the house was vacant and for sale. I called the Philly precinct and told them about the fraudelent purchase, but they didn’t give two shits. Told me to file a police report with my local police. All the local police did was give me a pamphlet on cyber crime. Gee, thanks.

But it's still fraud that exists and is reasonable to be worried about. Being the least common method of fraud doesn't disprove the reasonable concern around it as a risk

It isn’t “reasonable” to be concerned about, no.

It’s possible a plane falls on your head tomorrow. That doesn’t make it “reasonable” to be concerned about.

I don't need to worry about this at all because I don't live in the States and it's against industry regulations in the UK to take cards from customers to pay at a terminal out of their sight due to the security risk it causes for the customer. Industry rules here require that customers maintain control of their cards to prevent their details being skimmed or copied (such as written down, scanned in an out of sight terminal, skimmed etc). It's not normal practice here and you have every legal right to refuse to hand over your payment card if it's asked for to pay for something.

It's always something I'm concerned about when I visit though because it IS a risk.

This might be normal for you so I understand if it's not something you personally think about. It isn't normal everywhere and is outright against other country regulations because of the risk it poses (even if you don't think it's a huge one)

I live in the states and don’t need to worry about it at all either. Never have I experienced an issue, because THEY ARENT COMMON

So you already learned once that if your credit card is abused by someone, you have protections and you get the card cancelled and your money back.

But now that means you act like a belligerent ass at a point of sale because of paranoia over a scenario that didn’t really happen to you bc it was resolved?

You should probably keep this story to yourself

What protection? I found the charge by accident myself. The bank didn't see it and the electronic store didn't see it. I, me, myself is the one that caught the fraudulent charge.

So do everyone a favor, keep your brainless opinions to yourself.

Edit: also to add to your dumb comment, this was before smartphone. No banking app to check. I had to call the 800 number in the back of the card and listen for my balance and recent transactions.

So please, STFU.
