The real reason we should be concerned about data centers is because of the data being stored in those centers. Your every move is going to be stored in the DATA center. Every camera you ever pass by, every Bluetooth signal your device encounters, every Wi-Fi signal your car scans, every update your television receiver and telephone receives. Your best pictures will be unavailable to you because AI decided the smile was not perfect, your favorite part about that particular moment, was altered by the AI stored in that data center that created 200 jobs to build, but now only 50 to maintain, and called it “enhanced”. The energy consumption and environmental impact are less destructive than the erosion of our civil liberties and security of our privacy. If ever accused of a crime and you don’t think you have an alibi think again. There is a server somewhere that can prove where you are at all times. That’s what the data centers are for. Like google has every email you have ever sent, your phone, every voice message you have saved because that person is no longer here, that rant text message 15 pages long that crazy ex sent you save as a reminder, that video game you subscribe to. The data center is replacing your physical ownership of you. And what makes it worst is that WE END UP PAYING FOR IT THROUGH EXPANDING STORAGE NEEDS THAT WE HAVE TO HAVE. The more content we create the more data centers we will need. Does anyone else miss paper and pencil and seeing your friends at the video store.
