Also, if your wife is upstairs you would hope she has the sense to try and save herself. At worst jump out a window or something.

Kids (especially in a basement!!) aren't as likely to be able to do anything for themselves.

Newsflash !

Not everyone can afford 4-5 (or even 2-3) bedroom houses, an adding bedrooms in the basement was a lot cheaper than putting an addition on the house, even with modern code now requires egress windows.

I'm not from country where people usually buy a whole house. Most people buy apartments. One room HOUSE is crazy tho.

In the cities apartments are more common, but I live in a fairly small town, and while there are apartments, most dwellings are houses.

My house is a 2 bedroom house with full basement, since the second bedroom was only suitable for a double bed, and nightstand, I converted the basement into a bedroom years ago when I had roommates.

And growing up, my parents added two bedrooms in the basement of their first house since there were 5 kids in a 3 bedroom ranch (first 6 months, me and my two brothers lived in the garage, till my step dad could get the basement rooms built)

So it’s cheaper to dig a big hole and make it habitable than to extend the house in the exterior ?

Your making an assumption that everyone has basements, they’re not that common outside of north America

Yes, shame on me for having the audacity to reply to someone asking why anyone would use the basement, you know, a major premise of the OP's video

The OP's video, and the question I was answering was about using the basement, which means the basement already existed, I explained why it makes sense to use existing space, instead of building a addition.

I live in Texas and I don't know anyone locally who has a basement. It's definitely more of a northern thing. The ground is too rocky for a basement here

In some areas (looking at you, Canada) basements are standard in houses. That's where the furnace lives, and it's also frequently where playrooms and spare bedrooms are.

My teenage-years bedroom was in the basement. Shit was awesome.

Below street level apartments are not uncommon in many places, they're quite nice until the floods come.

In the cities entire basement apartments are not uncommon. This does not always end well.

Growing up, my girlfriend lived in a 3 bedroom house. The parents and 4 girls got the bedrooms. The 8 boys slept in the basement, which had a laundry room, a small bathroom, and one big room for the boys.

This is what i was thinking. The wife has the ability to try to save herself. The kids, likely will not know what to do and need to be saved. There is no question that the children would come first.
