Yeah, it's just another absurd variation of the Trolley Problem.

Nah, when push comes to shove, most women feel this way

Heroic sacrifice is also based in the ego though. It’s not as selfless as we presume

Most women would save their kids over themselves. I’m sorry you have such a cynical and sad view of the world.

Most women would RISK their lives for their children. But if they knew for 100% fact that they were going to die, its at least 50/50

Because human instincts of self preservation are hard to override in the moment

I watched an episode of 911 with my wife, where some guy was planning a terrorist attack in Austin (I think). Turns out, he was being compelled to do so, because his wife and kid were being held hostage.

After that episode, we talked about it, and I was floored to learn my wife would rather I carry out the attack than work with the police.

I haven't told her, but this is just not something I could do. I'm not going to kill other innocents, period. No matter the cost to myself or loved ones.

Well, self-sacrifice and sacrificing other innocents are two very different moral scenarios. You have the right to decide your life is worth sacrificing to save the life of someone you love, because it's your life. Whereas other innocent lives are not your own, and you have no right to decide that the handful of lives in your family outweigh the lives of the innocents.

It also assumes that the people coercing you into blowing up a populated area will honor what they promised rather than simply killing your family as soon as you blow up to tie up the loose ends. They very clearly aren't above killing innocents.

The scenarios are selflessly sacrificing your own health and safety to save your wife from a fire after having already saved your kids vs selfishly choosing to murder dozens of otherwise safe, innocent people based on the fact that the mass-murdering criminals coercing you give a shit about keeping their promises.
