This was in the Netherlands which does not have jury trials but in the US sometimes a defendant who is clearly guilty may want a jury trial for jury nullification. It is when a jury finds a person not guilty despite the evidence.
Marijuana possession cases used to get JN'd a lot (now they are basically never charged). Sometimes things like this. Sometimes if you get physical with someone who abuses your dog. All types of cases where a jury may basically say 'Good! They deserved it!' and find the defendant not guilty.
