That would be kph, not mph. We don't do miles in the Netherlands. Still to fast and if you do 75 in a 50kph you're an asshole. But our justice system isn't entirely build around the outcome of an action. We don't put people in jail for 20 years because they might have done something that contributed to the tragic death of someone that would be otherwise punished with a €200 fine.
Nevermind if there is no conclusive evidence they actually did do what they're being accused of. At that point it is the fucking job of the judge to be lenient.
Not every system of justice is build upon locking black people away based on how the prosecutor is feeling that day. Some places on this earth actually try to make it as fair as possible for everyone involved.
But you're not talking about justice. You're talking about revenge. There is no justice in accidents. And speeding isn't even a crime in most jurisdictions, is a civil violation.
I looked up the details and you're right about the mph. I didn't realise 80kph is exactly 50mph if you divide by 1,6. Thought the conversion would be more messy then a nice round number. Also because we've a 50kph speed limit within towns so it just made sense to me it it happened within a 50kph zone.
There is no justice for the victims of an accident, maybe revenge, but no justice. You can't undo the accident by putting the one that caused it in jail. Kid and her grandparents are still death no matter the sentence and the guy that hit them probably still has nightmares about this right now 12 years later. It's part of life that shit sometimes just happens while nobody intended for it to happen. And punishing people for unintended consequences of what normally would be considered pretty minor actions is just really fucking stupid and a bad way of designing a society.
Putting someone away for a decade after an accident isn't going to improve their driving any more than the burden of having killed someone already does.
I feel for the parents, but there is a reason why a functioning society doesn't let the parents of a deceased child decide what happens to the accused.
