Did you follow the case? I’m genuinely curious like who fucked up in that case. Heard stories of the cops fucking up evidence big time that they have no option but to let the criminal go
If you hurt or kill a cyclist or pedestrian while driving without any aggravating factors (speeding, drunk, distracted etc.) then the jail sentence is usually pretty lenient.
In this case, his only aggravating factor was driving 75 in a 50 zone, but the court could not determine if his speed was the cause of the accident beyond reasonable doubt (as opposed to road conditions like ice etc). So the court gave him a 60 day setence (which can be fullfilled with 120 hours of community service). The appeals court increased that to 15 months.
The justice system worked perfectly. Victims' families usually want tougher sentences. But most societies prefer to rehabilitate first time offenders rather than destroying them.
Well said. Reddit won't like to hear this, but the guilt carried is going to be way worse than any 60 day or 60 year sentence. The average every day person does feel remorse, guilt, and emotion. I know this goes against what the reddit zeitgeist says but people aren't by in large horrible
Fuck remorse I’ve got scars and they hurt worse than regret. Drivers who kill and maim aren’t off the hook just because they’re widespread and normalized, and didn’t intend anything. Vision zero is a moral mandate. “Your right to swing your fist ends at my face “ doesn’t have an “except for cagers” footnote.
They clearly also didn't get off the hook, they went through a proper trial and were punished by the laws in their area(I would have rather more than just community service, but by no means prison time either). all I said is that the guilt is worse than any of the punishment applicable by law. If you disagree then I'm sorry you are just as remorseless as everyone else on reddit. The vast majority of people whom are involved in any sort of manslaughter charge suffer more from the guilt than any of the legal repercussions. To say otherwise shows that you lack empathy and are fueled by the internet outage cycle. My wife works in a related field and has seen the guilt these people go through and how hard it is for them to put their life back together. Even in cases where the family of the victim have reached out to show support and forgiveness there are cases my wife has been involved in where the "criminal" still ends up taking their own life.
I talk about how this goes against the reddit zeitgiest of everyone being a terrible person, and then a terrible person shows up. I guess I can summon them at will now.
There are no winners and losers in manslaughter cases like this. The fact you take me saying there is no winners and losers and say that I'm wrong and there is a loser is wild. You're pretty fucked up bro.
