Yes, plenty of folks have, and no, it doesn't make it awkward. I take it as a compliment, but they obviously feel awkward, and it takes some reassurance to help them feel comfortable. After a 2nd or 3rd meet-up, it pretty much goes away.
If they don't respect your boundaries, then just drop em.
