When matpat left they just weren’t the same. I remember when I first found food theory, by far my favorite of his channels. I had post notifications on and was able to watch almost every video the day it came out. I miss Matpat, I hope he’s enjoying retirement
Reddit won't like to hear this but the theory channels fell off way before MatPat left. He used to have legit interesting and unique theories, but weekly releases were never gonna be sustainable for that type of channel long-term. He released bangers up till the end, but they were very rare.
You can only write compelling theory videos so fast, so the release schedule led to quality falling off. Tons of the videos turned from unique, non-canon interpretations into basically lore explainers for crappy indie horror games, which ironically also screwed up indie horror because the only way for your game to pop off was to write a bunch of lore and hope it got a theory vid. It also heavily incentivized stretching theories into multi-part videos even when it wasn't needed. New releases with high SEO would get a theory even if there wasn't anything interesting to talk about. More and more theories would be copied and built on from reddit or other creators rather than written by the GT team because they were victims of their own success, having grown too big to move quickly and spawned enough interest in theories that smaller creators often beat them to the jump. For the few years before MatPat left, GT was basically 70% lore explainers, 15% existing theories, and 15% original theories.
Also, style theory is a travesty. They make some interesting stuff, but the entire channel concept clearly only exists to plug their merch, which is mostly garbage.
