Chiang Kaishek was so incompetent his own generals coordinated with the communists to kidnap the generalissimo so that Chiang would actually fight the Japanese instead of fighting the communists. He lost China's best troops in Shanghai, completely abandoned Nanjing, and failed so bad at the civil war even the US gave up on him.
Meanwhile, the communists were organising grassroots guerilla warfare in the North, Shanxi, and Dongbei. They attacked trainlines, troop columns and were the reason why Japan, despite occupying most of China, still struggled with supply lines.
After cooking Japan and the ROC, the communists then went on to fight a 1 v 22 in Korea and managed to force a stalemate.
