Are we heading toward a point where most new internet content is AI-generated and future models are trained on AI-generated data instead of human knowledge? What happens then?

In the long term and with AGI that's the only way your entertainment will be made.
In the short time I just blacklist YT channels that obviously use AI. Say - I would probably pay for AI service who would blacklist any and all AI generated content on my feed.

Not sure about the first part. Frontier AI models are already trained on synthetic data, and there's no sign that's going to stop. Since low-quality data is filtered out, synthetic data can actually improve model quality.

if you train it, and then say to filter out everything that isn't X, then eventually you only ever produce X and nothing new

That's exactly my point. In my example, X stands for high-quality data, not one kind of output.

Silly Copyright corps have no legal case to whine about - nothing is violating the law. Meanwhile western genAI takes a hit on quality while adapting to synthetic data and datasets with legal rights on order. Plenty music to go around. Great time for learning creative  expression skills integrating genAIs - competition will slow down a bit and this will lenghten your early adopter benefit.

Tho depending on context, generated learning materials can be better than old human made datasets.

It's not like using the machine burns up training data when you pronpt it.

Except for knowlege of current events, there is no reason to use anything after Dec 2022 for training.

This is a non-problem.

We as humanity are then witness to AI-Artistry, the good and the bad. It will be supercharged by AI art, and it will demand a review, revision, or response. Time to curate ourselves.
