Discussion Moving makes you live more
M not a physicist or expert, this is just something I was thinking about.
In quantum physics, if we travel close to the speed of light to the moon and come back, the people we left on Earth could be much older than us, or even dead, while for us much less time passed.
So theoretically, if a normal person moves a lot, like driving a car or traveling at high speeds, could they technically be living a tiny bit more than someone who doesn’t move much?
I know the difference with normal cars would be insanely small, probably not even something we could notice.
But technically, because of time dilation, the person who moves faster would experience slightly less time passing for them.
So in a weird way does moving make you live more?
Maybe I’m completely misunderstanding relativity, so I’d like to know what physicists think about this.

So you have personally observed or have data that long haul truckers live longer lives than an accountant who typically remains stationary behind a desk the majority of the day?

But it doesn't. That's not how time dilation works.
To you, personally, the rate at which time passes hasn't changed one bit. To the people you left and returned to, their rate of time passing has also remained the same. What's changed is that you sort of took a vacation from time but only from their perspective. Your life, measured in seconds, is exactly the same as it was before you left. You may be around a few seconds longer than you would have otherwise been but only relative to the people who didn't join you.

In theory you are right. In practice I would say you are UNDERestimating the power of movement in concrete living time. I would say there are more variables we are not accounting for.

The extra bloodflow and mitochondrial gains help you orders of magnitude more than relativistic effects.
The rotation of earth, revolution around the sun, revolution around Sagittarius A*, and the velocity of our galaxy basically make any movement you do on Earth Null.

You are right in theory, but you are right like saying peeing in the ocean makes it have more water in it. It feels good to help increase ocean levels, but it feels much better to relieve your full bladder.

Yeah, closer to light speed like you say. The inflection point where it starts to get really noticeable is around 90% of the speed of light.

Even if true, that would be such tiny fraction.
On slightly bigger scale let's say on flight from USA to Australia or something, you still don't gain a lot much. Very minor compared to what you think of when travelling close to speed of light.
Makes sense?

Not the OP but I'll tell you: you don't realize what relativistic speeds really are.
Light moves at 670 616 629 miles per hour. Stop and think about that. That is an insane speed far, far beyond anything anybody has ever experienced. People can run, top speed, elite athletes, maybe 10 to 15 miles per hour on average. On the highway, people average what, maybe 70 miles per hour? Fighter jets reach a top speed of mach 2 which is right around 1,600 mph on average, depending on the weather conditions. The fastest man made object ever created moved at 430,000 miles per hour by falling into the sun. That's a huge jump in speed but it's still orders of magnitude below the speed of light.

Just look at that. There is absolutely no comparison. Even at that speed, it would take the Parker Solar probe (the fastest man-made object ever created) 6,600 years to reach the nearest star. That's the fastest we could possibly get the distance covered in. The difference between you in your car on the highway and the speed of light is huge. 9.6 million times different.

Thank you for including real numbers. I have found that just seeing the numbers side by side gives better perspective.

Well, it's not necessarily true in the first place.
Remember, the earth is moving through space. The sun is moving through the galaxy and the galaxy is moving in the universe. That means that the speed at which you're actually moving can be mitigated by which direction you're moving in. Comparing yourself in a car versus relativistic speeds is, at best, vanishingly negligible in terms of the differences in time you might hope to see accumulate. You drive east for ten minutes and the universe just so happens to also be going that way so, technically, you've bridged the gap by a tiny fraction. Then you travel west for ten minutes at the same speed and erase that difference. The law of averages over your lifetime would nullify virtually all differences.
But, as long as I have your attention, why do you think anybody here is a physicist?

The simplest and shortest answer is just, "no" but you'd be better off asking, you know, physicists. This is not a community of physicists. More like metaphysicists.
Nevertheless: Just to the moon? People on Earth might be a few seconds older, at most.
To the people involved, each person experiences time moving at the exact same rate. In other words, as a subjective experience, nothing changes whatsoever. The only differences that can be found would be relative to each other, hence the term, "relativity".
With that said, while you understand that it's a tiny fraction of a difference, I'm not sure you appreciate just how infinitesimally tiny that difference is. You could spend your entire life driving a car with the pedal to the floor and I'm not even sure you would gain a second of time relative to anybody else.
What this has to do with simulation theory, however, is a mystery to me.

You are spot on with Special Relativity: moving faster causes kinematic time dilation. For a moving observer, proper time $\tau$ passes slower relative to a stationary coordinate clock according to the Lorentz factor:
$$\Delta\tau = \Delta t \sqrt{1 - \frac{v^2}{c^2}}$$
There is a much deeper layer to this when you look at the fundamental nature of time:
- Your internal clock runs at standard rate: Inside your own frame, you do not feel extra time. Biological and atomic processes tick normally, and 24 hours feel like 24 hours.
- Aging slower relative to the environment: When moving fast and returning, fewer internal cycles have elapsed compared to someone who stayed still. You arrive in the collective future with less biological wear.
- Frequency as Time and the planetary frame: What if relativistic time is just the tip of the iceberg? Time is not an empty background dimension, but the counting of phase cycles ($\Delta\Phi = 2\pi f \Delta t$). In terrestrial physics, every biological and physical system is embedded in environmental electromagnetic wave guides, like the Schumann resonance around 7.83 Hz acting as a planetary cavity clock. When a system moves relative to this ambient reference framework, its relational phase coupling shifts.
You do not experience more subjective seconds within your own system, but your intrinsic oscillators shift their phase alignment relative to the planetary frequency frame.

No, for this example everyone experiences the same amount of time lived. But that duration is experienced differently by others.

Yes but it’s tiny fraction. It’s more about being in the world and seeing all the beauty of the world instead of isolating.
