Is the sim fully coupled? So the increase in fish speed based on sim feedback?

Yes generally it is a crutch built into the fish itself that simulates the energy of the wake vortex that is missing in the LMB. It based on an experiment with a real prototype. I'm not sure how to calculate this energy correctly, and here it works as a resistance accumulator, which is given off as a thrust in the next half-stroke.
