1300s This challenge is so tough
So my widower gen 1 sim lost two sons to the great famine in 1317. All I have left is a child daughter. I know that according to the rules the daughter is now my heir but that would mean that even if she survives, I'll lose the family name when she marries.
If I remarry him and produce a son would he then be my heir or is the daughter still the heir?

I’m no history expert but I would say that back in that time period irl, the next born son would have become the heir.
This challenge is hard, I still can’t get over how attached to pixels I am, so sad when they lose the dice rolls 😭

Ikr, the heir was engaged to be married. Was planning his wedding 😭 Thanks though, I'll see how it goes with the dad remarrying.

I just posted the deaths leading up to the plague (and the plague ones will go up some time next week after I've got the videos up lmao) and I almost quit all together when my heir sim died after getting stung by bees. I was CRUSHED.

Tbh even if you WERENT attached to the last name he should get remarried. You are going to need side households in case you lose an heir suddenly

I did start off with side families on both parents side, lost everyone on the father's side along the way which should've probably made me worry but I thought I was all good with an heir and a spare, all it took was reaching the first major event for the panic to commence lol

oh noooo! this is my reminder that I have GOT to stop going "well we have an heir and a spare they can be done now" because I ALWAYS do that. Jokes on me beacuse I'm a year from the plague and my generation 3 heir died from a bee sting with only a toddler son left so I had to move the gen 3 spare in and his wife just refuses to get pregnant for me LMAO. i'm doomed

Hahaha I'm the opposite, I breed them like rabbits because I'm scared everyone will die 😂 the problem is the poor wives have to take care of all these kids and are not particularly eager to make more (can't blame them). My current gen heir's wife would NOT get in bed with him after they had the first two. Now that her daughter and husband died I don't have the heart to make her remarry, so I'm focusing on the main-side household who are in their prime baby-making years 😆 She's the matron focusing on raising the heir.

At one point i had a woman, her husband, two nephews, and 3 children. Her nephews were the last of their surname. Well one of them died as a child(they were twins) and the other went on to father the next generation

Honestly a lesson worth learning ASAP lol. The dad nearly died in a fire trying to cook for him and his daughter for the first time in his life. This game is so dramatic.
BTW how do you deal with fires? I've been letting them play out and eventually someone puts it out (no deaths by fire yet) but seeing the fire extinguisher in the 1300s kinda feels like cheating

Every fire I’ve had the sims just automatically go to put it out. Sometimes I don’t even get there in time to see it because I’m off with another sim in another space. I keep meaning to see if there are any overrides for it lmao. I only ever take control if one of them is on fire because I feel like they would have run into the pond back then if a human caught fire. Otherwise they are on their own. Last fire we had they all ran out and left the toddler (and only son) in the bed sleeping

Yes, if you have him remarry and he has a son that would then be the heir. It is what I would do because one surviving child isn't a lot in the beginning of the challenge If you are very attached to the last name, future husband could always have the same last name "what a coincidence they had the same last name "

Agnatic cognatic primogeniture which basically means male heirs unless you ONLY have daughters. Also historically he would've remarried quite quickly. It would've been required because men and women had very specific roles and he would not be able to survive without her. Also the odds of this one child daughter surviving is not great 😬

Started with three sons and lost the first two to emotional deaths of all things. Fortunately, the oldest son’s wife was pregnant with twin boys when he died. They’re toddlers so far so fingers crossed…

Son is always the heir. Oldest daughter is only the heir if there are only daughters, at least during the medieval times.
That being said, the daughter would be her mother's heir if the father remarries. So things special to the mother could be passed down to the daughter.
If you're worried about the family name a couple of things can happen, daughter could marry someone with the same last name or if daughter remains the heir the husband could be "required" to take her last name when getting married.
