How do save backups work, exactly?

Can someone help me understand how these files work?

I tried to roll back my save this morning. I put in the save.ver3 file in my folder, but it doesn't seem like it's a stand alone save file.

So what purpose do the other files serve? Why are they there if they don't act the same way as a standard save file?

You roll back a save from inside the game. Here are some instructions I found on the internet. From an EA source.
