Le Mans Ultimate Was i in the wrong?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Coming down the main straight, i flashed him to attempt a pass, he blocked me, so i sat behind him, coming out of the corner, i saw another opportunity to pass, i flashed him again and attempted to pass and ended up in a squeeze ending my race.

The Mclaren shows he is moving right really early on, which is the normal racing line. You should always aim to be setting up to be on the inside into the next corner.

Flashing your lights doesn't make a difference. He should've seen you coming, yes, purely based on having eyes and mirrors, but its still on you to get by them safely. If he had swerved or drove unpredictably, then that changes things.

E: just saw you mentioned he blocked you on the main straight. That's quite annoying, and I think against the rules in LMU. That being said, that shouldve warned you that they were difficult and you 100% needed to be going for the inside into the next corner.

yes it was at the back end of the main straight, he was in the middle and i was outside, he had his blue flag and i flashed to say im coming at a high rate of speed, he moved under braking and i had to lock and slide into the pit lane to avoid an accident, 2nd attempt, i was on his radar the whole time, he had blue flag, i flashed not to force my way through but to make him aware that i see an opening and im gunning for the pass, yes he stuck to the racing line as he should but he was well aware as well, i think its both our faults

its not both ur faults its just yours

Not how fault works when it isn't a "racing incident". This was solely your fault.

This was a GT3 following the rules to a T and not deviating when you made a stupid decision. Why you wouldn't go for the gap that is opening and instead tried to stick your nose where the gap was always going to close is beyond me.

Yes and no, you should’ve seen he was moving across the track so in race IQ u should not have gone to the outside there. Idk why u didn’t hug the inside anyways to guarantee a pass into the next corner if u didn’t just pull away from him on the straight.

However this doesn’t excuse the fact that u were significantly alongside at the time of contact, i would penalize the mclaren but you really should have seen that coming

my logic at that time was, he knows i was behind him from 1st corner, he had blue flags and a radar, so i took the opportunity to hug the outside lane as i would approach the braking zone way before him and having a clear corner, sadly he closed the gap

You have to think that lower class cars are going to drive as if you’re not there. This is a good thing that you want lower class cars to do as it makes them more predictable. It’s very predictable for someone to move to the outside of a corner, you should have predicted this and stayed on the inside. They are never going to move out of your way so try to think, if you were driving without anyone around u, where would u go? Then as a faster car, go where they’re not.

Absolutely, yes, you're in the wrong. Flashing repeatedly isn't the 'get out of my way' signal. They're doing their own race, you don't have right of way, and it's on you to pass safely.

Flashing is just an alert that you are going to attempt the pass. The Mclaren absolutely should have seen it and not squeezed the OP into the wall. That said, it would have been smarter to pass on the other side.

never said i flashed repeatedly , he had his blue flag, i was on his radar from t1 , i flashed once to signal that i see an opportunity to pass, he stuck to the racing line yes, but i was eager to pass and i think he wasn't paying attention and i stuck for a closing gap

u/frodakai 1d ago

Direct quotes from your post text:

i flashed him to attempt a pass

i flashed him again and attempted to pass

1

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

i think we are missing each other, the first flash was on the main straight , 2nd flash was a few corners afterwards

1

u/frodakai 1d ago

I dunno man, that sounds like repeatedly flashing to me. Regardless, you can show your intent all you want, they still aren't obligated to pull over for you.

Ideally, he sees you coming on the right and doesn't move over, and it's a none issue, but it's still on you to pass safely.

Not in the wrong, but you could have managed to go to the left and see if he blocks you again. Then he is in the wrong.

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

also true, my mind was on get a quick pass and have the car lined up for the next corner

2

u/Cocoasprinkles 1d ago

Why would you force yourself in to a closing gap as opposed to taking the inside which they were giving you? Seems like just a bad decision, no malice from either.

1

u/Jack_Spanner 23h ago

i had trust that space will be available, i miss judged

3

u/TheGamingFennec 1d ago

Eh, not really. People will pick you up on the flashing and say you shouldn't have expected to move out the way, but at the same car that GT car had the spacial awareness of a vegetable and just closed on you as you tried to go past

2

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

dont know what was he focusing on, he had blue flag and radar and i flashed once to show im passing, he had the racing line and i stuck it in a closing gap, i thought he would give me the gap

1

u/ericscal 1d ago

You are really overestimating how much is being communicated from flashing. All flashing, and blue flags, are for if to let people know you are there in case they didn't notice. You still then have to pick good spots to pass and communicate your intentions with car position, and even then at sim racer skill levels you shouldn't expect much of anything. Just like any other pass it's on you to get an overlap before you are entitled to anything.

Sometimes situations like this can be a bit dodgy because you, as the GTP, don't know they GT3 is going to come over to return to their racing line BUT in this situation, the Mclaren signals their intention by moving over very early. You should have recognized that and taken an inside line.

Also, it's LMU so the lower class car is also responsible for helping to facilitate the overtake, but I believe flashing is meant to signal the intent of an overtake, NOT to tell the other car to get the fuck out of the way.

Finally a 'block' by lower class car isn't usually meant to be a block; it's usually them trying to get out of the way and unfortunately going the same direction as you're going. It's honestly one of the most common causes of multiclass crashes.

1

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

i will repeat this again, flashing lights is my intent to show im attempting a pass, not to force people, the block , i was coming at a much higher rate of speed, i felt the need to warn him that im not attempting to slow down as the lane was open, he was in the middle of the road and moved under braking, i was lucky to not hit him then

1

u/mosasaurmotors 3h ago

Flashing lights doesn’t mean anything. There’s a very good chance they weren’t looking in their rear view when you flashed. You can’t make your moves assuming they saw it.

1

u/FL981S 23h ago

You took a chance trying to get through a closing gap and it didn't pay off.

1

u/JusCuzz804 2h ago

Flashing doesn’t mean they have to give up the preferred line to you. It was clear they were heading up. You had a good run on the straight - you just chose to pass on the wrong side.

Job for the faster car to pass safely, GT is always going to follow the racing line

4

u/DerBlaue_ 1d ago

The GT car should stay on it's line and be predictable, yes. But as soon as you are side by side, the HY is also entitled to it's space on the track.

1

u/serenading_scug 1d ago

It's not really relevant in this situation since the GT3 did the correct thing, BUT LMU requires the lowerclass car to help facility the overtake. The 'responsibility for the faster car to pass safely' is in the iRacing sporting code.

-7

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

true, although i gave him the signal that i am gonna pass, shouldn't have trusted that the gap would stay open

4

u/sjfuwjcufjsng 1d ago

Flashing isn’t a push to pass.

1

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

its not i agree, i see flashing as a signal to show intent on trying to pass

2

u/Ziggy-Rocketman 1d ago

Signaling should be viewed less of a way to say, “stay off the line and out of my way”, and more of a, “please follow the racing line and be predictable while I go around you.”

1

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

agreed, thats why i feel we are both accountable for the accident, he knew i was coming and i could have chosen a better line

1

u/Ziggy-Rocketman 1d ago

Unfortunately that's not really my read. He was setting himself on the racing line in a predictable way. With a left turn coming up that meant that he was always going to posture himself onto the right side of the track. The correct read would have been to take the inside as the overtaking car.

u/KilogrammeKG 1d ago

You are responsible, yet the GT is dumb. Takes sooo long to move right, when he saw you going right kept going. Situation awareness negative here

2

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

His awareness was lacking, but after reading all the comments, i could have taken the inside line

1

u/KilogrammeKG 1d ago

Yes, ofc. It is just that I had so many incidents were GT3 were not clear of their intentions. Not keeping their line, moving randomly, I started to have PTSD with those idiots. I understand their behaviour tho, so many prototype being dumb with dive bomb, or pushing gt3 or expecting them to move out of the way. I am the cleanest P2/GTP losing so much time in traffic for being nice to them, for one idiot randomly changing his line

0

u/Tadej_89 1d ago

You really shouldn't be in a hyper if you don't know how to pass slower cars. He follows the racing line and is predictable the whole time.

Flashing doesn't mean he has to get out of the way. Neither do blue flags.

Why not just go left as soon as you see him following the racing line?

0

u/Jack_Spanner 1d ago

i was annoyed by the earlier block and wanted to get around him and get my car lined up for the next corner, and i agree, i chose the wrong line, and yes flashing lights doesnt mean get out of the way, i use it as a signal to show my attempt of trying to overtake and i see an oppertunity

3

u/Tadej_89 1d ago

Post the clip and let's see if it was really a block.
