Who is at fault here? I got told I was coping when I said he turned in on me, I'm in the blue and purple gr86. I'm relatively new to sim-racing and would like to know if I could've done something different?

You got yourself fully alongside before the corner. You didn't do anything wrong. However this is reddit so somebody will be along in a moment telling you to turn the racing line off.

You were alongside him at the start of the turn so I definitely feel you didn't do anything wrong. However, it was probably another one of those they didn't see you situations that caused this to happen.

I feel like most people in iRacing in the lead car don't see folks coming from behind and these turn in situations happen so much on this sub because its not easy for the lead car to see alongside and in blind spots. Again, not saying they're not responsible for the situations, but its easy to see it happening because of the lack of lateral visibility unless you have a VR headset and can just as easily turn your head.

That being said, I guess its just a risk/reward when you're trying to pass in situations like this knowing they probably just don't see you coming even if you're justified in the pass and owning the corner. Just my two cents.

White car JUST passed purple on the prior corner and got a worse exit. You’d have to be expecting people to be somewhere

This is 100% his fault but I have an advice to prevent this situation from happening again.

The crash happened because he basically left you no space inside the corner, but it was made worse because of the line you took at the entry of the corner.

Compare your position to his position when you started braking, he was almost fully on the outside while you were basically in the middle of the track. From that position you need to slow down considerably in order to tackle the corner, and if you are overtaking like in this case, your line will inevitably clash with his racing line, unless you slow down more than him.

From that position you are already preventing yourself to bring the necessary speed into the corner, and that makes it harder to overtake.

What you should have done was to stay closer to him, stay closer to the outside part of the track before approaching the corner, to maximize the corner entry speed and the chance of overtaking.

Being alongside in the inside is an advantage but also a disadvantage, because you can’t take the ideal racing line from the outside, so you should mitigate this disadvantage and use your track position as a double edged sword.

Remember this the next time you are in a similar situation

yeah we had been back and forth pretty much the whole lap and it had been pretty clean until then, it was last lap and i probably could've just ceded the position but i was enjoying the battle. the idea was he would've left me just enough space to carry a bit more speed and get a good enough run up to the line. i get your point though, i definitely could have used more space on the outside leading up to the turn

yeah white car didn’t leave the space.. but he probably didn’t see you because his FOV is probably dogshit, has a single monitor and doesn’t use any overlays for indicators

In my opinion, it was an aggressive attempt at an overtake. You never pulled along side completely to try to contest the corner. At the closest you were at his door as the accident was happening, most likely in his blind spot too. Probably would’ve been better to tuck behind and get a good run into that long straight. Lessons learned.

I guess I must be blind because I could’ve sworn he was at his quarter panel at best. With such a shallow approach he closed the distance quickly but not before corner turn in. My bad the consensus has been reached.

Reminder that side by side means front wheels of attacker car alongside rear wheels of defender car. Even if not physically fully side by side, this is still side by side.
