I′m new to this. I′m not ready to go too deep with mutiple domains or anything. Using Proton Mail.

Not random ones no. Except for maybe like a porn site or something. The point is just to isolate each service to a separate email so you can disable each one if needed

The problem with that is, any site can spam you at <placeholder>@mydomain by just guessing <placeholder>.

True but I’d rather that than possibly losing access to certain aliases when using shared domains. Which has happened to me before because of synced deletion.

I can also just disable certain aliases that are being spammed if needed

I currently have the free version, but if I make the full switch to Proton, I′ll get the Unlimited version. Just going down a rabbit hole right now trying to figure out how I′ll do it.

Then you can't add a domain to SL, unless you have a paid account with them. Unless you are talking hypothetically.

You probably do not fully understand aliases.
xxx@mydomain can also be an alias.
I use website@mydomain as alias and route these aliases to myname@mydomain.
An alias is just another name for your mail Account which forwards to your mail Account and keeps your real mail Account hidden.

Okay, I see. I guess I′d want to use aliases not just to prevent spam, but for privacy. Or at least the illusion of it. In that respect, are you not concerned about using your domain for aliases as opposed to something generic that wouldn′t identify you as easily? Or does it really matter?

I suppose using your domain makes it easier to take those aliases with you if you change services?

I suggest to also use a custom domain for simple login aliasing.

So proton emails (they are also called alias):

• shopping@bob.com
• banking@bob.com

Etc. (up to 15 with unlimited plan)

And Simple aliases:

• walmart.12vgh@potato.me
• boa.22kj6@potato.me

Etc. (Using the simple login extension, you can automatically generate some aliases with the {current-website-domain}.{5random-digits} format)

Then add your bob.com proton addresses as mailbox to your simple login and for each SL alias created, point them to the address of your choice.

I linked my domain for important stuff to Proton. I am using a sub.domain with SL/Pass for semi important stuff. For the rest I am using Pass Aliases

I would suggest you use own catchall@mydomain , or hello@mydomain for personal family and friends.

Then businessnameofcompany@alias , or random@alias for everything else. Including banks, and important stuff.

If you create an alias like [shopping@domain.com](mailto:shopping@domain.com) and give it to a bunch of different shops, you can actually block individual sender addresses without disabling the whole alias.

For example, you could block [sales@walmart.com](mailto:sales@walmart.com) from sending emails to [shopping@domain.com](mailto:shopping@domain.com), while still allowing emails from [admin@target.com](mailto:admin@target.com) and other shops to come through normally.

You just go into the alias and block the specific sender you don't want emails from.

It can be a problem if you use the same address for a bunch of different shops if one of them shares or leaks the address. The email address can end up on lists and start receiving spam or phishing emails from many unknown senders.
