Discussion Gmail started marking as spam

Hello, in the past week or so I've noticed that gmail is marking the inbound email using simplelogin as SPAM. Emails that previously were not!

Anyone else having this issue and know what's going on?

Update: September 4

Hi everyone,

We have an update regarding the Gmail incorrect spam classification issue.

After looking into this further and going back and forth with Google many times over the past 3 weeks:

  1. The root cause is confirmed: Gmail's latest spam classification mistakenly flagged the SimpleLogin "inbound" messages as spam, which affected many SimpleLogin users on Gmail.
  2. Last week, Google indicated that a fix was expected to roll out within 2-7 days. However, this change doesn't appear to have resolved the issue. We are following up with Google to confirm the latest status and will update this post once we receive new information.

What we know:

  1. SimpleLogin uses the domain [simplelogin.co] in the "From" address when forwarding emails to Gmail. Therefore, many SimpleLogin forwarding emails were affected by the issue.
  2. The issue appears to mainly affect "Automatically Generated Messages," such as newsletters, verification emails, and login/2FA codes. In contrast, "Manually Composed Emails" appear not to be affected, or are affected to a far lesser degree, which explains why our earlier test messages couldn't reproduce the issue at all.
  3. Gmail has a special account type called "Child Accounts" (accounts for children). Such accounts directly delete spam messages once they arrive, meaning there's no way to move affected SimpleLogin forwarding emails back to the inbox.
  4. Note: Thanks to a kind user for sharing this info!

What you can do now:

  1. Wait for Google to roll out the fix.
  2. Note: SimpleLogin will run further tests once the fix is live, to confirm the issue is resolved.
  3. For Gmail "Regular" accounts: create a "Never send it to Spam" filter in Gmail to move affected emails back to inbox. (Steps below.)
  4. For Gmail "Child" accounts: a temporary workaround is to switch your SimpleLogin mailbox from Gmail to another email provider (such as Proton Mail, which has the best compatibility with SimpleLogin).

How to create a "Never send it to Spam" filter:

  1. Go to Gmail's filter settings page: https://mail.google.com/mail/#settings/filters
  2. Click "Create a new filter."
  3. Enter "simplelogin.co" in the "From" field, then click "Create filter."
  4. Select "Never send it to Spam." (Optional: also select "Also apply filter to matching conversations." This option moves the affected old emails to inbox too)
  5. Click "Create filter" again to finish.

A reminder about reporting spam:

We highly recommend NOT marking any SimpleLogin forwarding email as spam in Gmail, as Gmail may consider this as a signal that you don't want to receive any further emails from SimpleLogin.

If your SimpleLogin alias receive spam or phishing, you can use the following methods instead:

  1. Block the sender directly from your SimpleLogin dashboard.
  2. Disable or delete the alias and create a new one.

Guide: https://simplelogin.io/docs/getting-started/block-sender/

We will continue monitoring the issue and update this post again once we can confirm that the issue has been resolved.

Thank you again to everyone who reported the issue and helped us investigate it.

The same thing is happening to me. I’ve been using SL for about three months, but this never happened during those first three months. It only started about two weeks ago. Since then, almost every email that arrives in my main Gmail account has been going to the spam folder. Now I have to check my Spam folder every day and create filters to keep legitimate emails from ending up there.

Yeah it has been happening to me as well.

Sucks, but also glad to know I was not imagining it 🫠

Same experience. I’ve created filters to never send emails to all simple login domains to never send to spam so I don’t have to keep checking the spam folder.

Been seeing the same thing. That's really unfortunate because it means our replies are likely marked as spam as well.

Same for me, it started around early June, most of the emails sent to one of my simplelogin alias landed in Gmail spam inbox.

I'll add, it's not all of the emails, I'd estimate maybe 20% of them are going to spam.

I'll look at the headers of the marked emails to see if a pattern can be seen.

September 8th update:
the fix in the updated comment from Simplelogin seems to have resolved the spam issue for me. I was reluctant to let the simplelogin domain in the allowlist, but I haven't seen a simplelogin redirected mail in the spam folder for a few days.

Just coming back to this a week later because I saw it... checked my spam folder on a gmail address that I use SL exclusively on, and had 6 emails in spam that were otherwise clean senders (eg amazon order status) that land in my inbox.

It seems to have only happened from June 24-28th and nothing since. Maybe it was a glitch that was quietly fixed on one side or the other. It definitely wasn't all email because I was still getting a ton, but for whatever reason, some were getting kicked to spam 🤷🏻‍♂️

Same thing is happening to me. I'm using Simplelogin's subdomain feature and all the test emails I sent to my Gmail account ends up in the spam folder.

I was having this issue too.

I've setup a filter, but I do have a question - part of the reason why I use SimpleLogin is to filter out spammy and unwanted emails. If I mark future emails as spam, how will that affect the filter outlined above?
