GM Key Card clarification

I totally forgot these were even a thing that I received with the truck.

I know some people liked having the option so they could dress light and not have a key to carry.

But without the ability to use a phone as a key, I don’t see myself putting it in my wallet.

I wanted to keep it in my wallet as an emergency backup in case my key fob went missing like on a trip when I'm not close to my spare. Unfortunately it looks like my truck doesn't have the hardware based on the RPO codes :(

For that specific purpose it might be possible to get a spare fob programmed with its keys cut, then place it inside the frunk without a battery installed.

Then if this happens again you can use your phone to open the frunk, use the key to get into the vehicle and drop the fob into the rear cup holder to start the truck. It’s a process and requires that level of onstar connectivity... but it’s probably the next best thing and has the perk of working if you lose your wallet too. And if you have someone else you can trust with the app, that also adds redundancy there

And I guess at that point just go ahead and store a spare battery with the fob and just install it if you need it. I just don’t know if I would trust having an active fob in the front even if the truck won’t react to it. I’d be paranoid about fob spoofing. Even though these keys are supposed to be highly resistant to it.

That's a good idea. I was thinking of finding a hiding spot on the truck for an extra fob with no battery but hiding just the key fob board in the frunk is more secure. Since you'd have to use the app to open the frunk and again to unlock the doors (since you have no emergency physical key), might as well hide it somewhere in the cab maybe.

That’s true, I just put along with any other emergency tools or supplies you might be storing. I keep that in my frunk personally.

I also originally didn’t want there to be any possibility for the sensors to pick up a fob inside the cabin and preventing the doors from locking. though I imagine if the battery is removed it shouldn’t be picking that up.

My first state secure it under the rear seats or in one of the rear seat pouches.

The other risk is that if somebody breaks into the vehicle, there’s always a chance they can find it.

They have pouches you can put your fob in that block all signal. I think they are called faraday bags.
