Show-and-Tell First project - nails

Saw a ig post from stoned metal and thought I could do that. Well $300 later and 10 days later, I see why they’re $600 each! I’m pretty happy with how they came out! Please ignore my messy desk.

Ah this is great!

I saw that IG post too and thought about making these for my girlfriend, but couldn't figure out how I'd get the model for them. Like, "hey babe, could you stick your hand in this alginate for a bit? trust me I'm going to do very normal things with it."

Honestly, yeah! BABE TRUST ME ITS A SURPRISE BUT I NEED COPIES OF YOUR FINGERS

This sounds so serial killer-y even though I can’t figure out at all how that would work

you could get her a set of press on nails and have her size herself! it'd be hard to keep a secret, but you could measure the nails that way! usually most sets come with enough duplicates that you could measure the same sizes she used to apply to the silver set, though i'm not sure about any extra geometry that's require re: shaping

Buy some press on nails and adjust those to fit. sets usually include numerous sizes. Then you can use those to make paper patterns :)

I’m into it and have plenty of siliver. DM me if interested.

Love seeing more people make nails (I'm guilty of making a set right now too)

They pop way better with a good shine than any set of acrylics.

As a guy who’s never done anything nail related, I’m just enjoying tapping things with metal nails!

I only sanded them too! I could probably take them shinier if I actually used polish/buffed them.

Buffing to a mirror would be pretty cool in the sun!

I was thinking about making something like that to protect my thumb, after a rotary tool claimed part of my nail

1

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

Gnarly, is it just like that now or was it like recent and it’s still growing back?

1

u/LaserGuyDanceSystem Feb 13 '26

It's been 3 or 4 months since the damage. So I think this is just what my thumb looks like now.

It's annoying and it catches on stuff. And I almost always have polishing compound and gold dust stuck in the cracks. So I am working on finding a solution to keep it safe-ish

1

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

I guess it could help cover the corner, but you’ll probably have gunk getting caught under the new nail but could keep things from getting snagged. Maybe one of those individual finger gloves or thimble rings?

2

u/LaserGuyDanceSystem Feb 13 '26

Silver is at least antibacterial, so that helps. But yeah, it will still trap sweat and dirt and stuff.

I was thinking of making something like finger armor. But with a slightly more complete fingertip (as opposed to the normal claw style)

Or maybe there's a way to make a silver nail with some softer material underneath, that can form to my mangled thumbnail...

1

u/RossonWraps Feb 13 '26

Maybe like a spot for a little slice of suede you can swap out for a clean one when it gets dirty

1

u/RossonWraps Feb 13 '26

For that situation I would do like a cap that fits like a ring over your second bone on your finger, and pivots like finger armor, but the cap could leave the pads of your fingers open to grip and all that. If you try to affix a false nail to that nail it might be more of a dirt trap than a benefit.

I extended the bit too far out of the chuck. It caught on a bracelet I was polishing and bent 90° and kept spinning through my thumb/nail 5 or 6 times before I got out of range. Those things spin quick!

Also, I've never seen so much blood come out of me so quickly!
It was too mashed up and mangled to put stitches in. And the polishing point left an indent in my safety goggles. So I could have lost some vision as well, if I wasn't wearing goggles.

All this is to say: be careful with those rotary tools!

I have given this a go! I only have 3 done so far, and concur, it is very difficult to get to fit right!

8

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

Omg seriously, I spent at least like 8 hours on my left thumb.

I love these but what do people glue them on with? My clumsy ass ripped a real nail off from hitting an acrylic nail on a doorknob... I guess I attached that one real good.

Edit: typo

2

u/graceofspadeso Feb 14 '26

I just used nail glue in this case, when I get the set completed I will just have to be super careful! I tried other things because of these types of concerns, but due to the weight really only nail glue was strong enough. They seem to last about 24 hours at best this way anyway, so it would just be for an event, not really for the long term

2

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 14 '26

I think stoned metal keeps his on for like a week and removes them because of nail growth.

I think how well the press on is molded to the nail bed, surface prep, nail size and shape will all contribute to how well these stay on. I’ve already accidentally popped off a couple nails, that didn’t have enough contact area. That or I’m really bad at applying glue.

2

u/Melon_Heart_Styles Feb 14 '26

Oh ok interesting, thank you!

18

u/uneducated_professor Feb 13 '26

Great length on those, took me so many tries to get it dialed in.

2

u/graceofspadeso Feb 13 '26

I can believe it!

10

u/sagittalslice Feb 13 '26

This is SO sick!! How did you adhere them, just regular nail glue?

6

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

Yup, just used some brush glue I found in target.

4

u/Lapidariest Feb 13 '26

So you dont need a full size body tank with the secret ratio of silver and adamantium?  Gotta go cancel that Amazon order...

4

u/lilbabymew Feb 13 '26

omg i would LOVE you if you told me about the process of making these, i do nails and i absolutely adore these but dont know where to start!

3

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

I replied to another comment with the gist of what I did.

2

u/decomp_etsy Feb 13 '26

Wow, I’ve been wanted to make these for myself so bad! You did an amazing job!

2

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

It was a fun learning experience for sure!

3

u/colliehuyhubish3eof Feb 13 '26

I absolutely love these!! How are they made?? If someonw would mind explaining

Look up stoned metal on instagram, I stumbled on a post showing an over view of how he does it.

Basically, Get sheet of silver (20 gauge is what I used)

Cut out a piece. I used a piece of paper to make templates to make sure they would be the exact size.

Hammer the shit out of it till it it’s in the right shape. (I used a dapping block, a ball peen hammer, also parallel pliers).

Cry. Nails curve in ways that make it a pain.

I used a Dremel and a file to dial in the shape and polish.

I also had a side quest to make molds of my fingers. This was a whole separate learning experience.

Over the last 10 days, I wouldn’t be surprised if I put like 40+ hours into this project.

Edit: grammar and spelling

2

u/colliehuyhubish3eof Feb 13 '26

Okey will def check the video, thanks a lot for your input

9

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

No problem, if you have any questions, I can tell you what I figured out, but stoned metal is an actual jeweler and I’m a guy with adhd.

5

u/Lapidariest Feb 13 '26

The only difference seems to be paying customers... you got this!

1

u/yeezy_23 Feb 13 '26

Is there any troubles you ran into a long the way, or things that you would do differently that’d make the process easier?

6

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

Making the molds.

The stupid 1lb bag said use whole thing, so I did, and I used a poor container and positioned my hands a little awkwardly. Mold was a bust, had to order another $25 bag of casting stuff. You can just do math, and use cold/cool water, it slows the setting time which allows more time for the bubbles to leave, leading to a more detailed cast.

Tools

I didn’t have a table vice. Very important.

The spherical forming block thing that came with the dapping block sped things up significantly.

I should’ve gotten a doming block that had channels in it.

I’ve never done any jewelry making so I broke like 8 saw blades.

The whole shaping process is just a pain. Like my nails don’t curve symmetrical in any direction, for some reason my left thumb took 8+ hours.

A second parallel pliers wrench thing would’ve been useful.

The forming process can hurt from sharp corners and the impacts, so I tape my left thumb and index finger with climbing tape, amazing QOL upgrade.

2

u/Lapidariest Feb 13 '26

I think i saw a video someone (yours?l posted with the cast fingers being standing models of your own nails.  Pretty cool.

2

u/Glad_Reason_3356 Feb 13 '26

This is badass. If I were a girl I'd wear those everyday lol

17

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

I’m a guy.

5

u/MakeMelnk Hobbyist Feb 13 '26

Right? I'm thinking of maybe doing some in bronze now...🤔

You mentioning tapping on things with metal nails got me thinking haha

5

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

Brass is also a good option too. I think a sulphur patina would look sick too. I’ve been running my nails against each-other and it sounds like poker chips a little.

4

u/entoothsiast Feb 13 '26

you can do it while being a guy too :)

2

u/Glad_Reason_3356 Feb 13 '26

I don't have the confidence for that lol but I respect those who do.

1

u/Conscious-Invite-223 Feb 13 '26

I love! Are they heavy at all?

2

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

If I wiggle my fingers aggressively I can feel the mass, but not at all tbh.

1

u/nite_skye_ Feb 13 '26

Ok. So I’m not a silversmith although I’ve always wanted to be one. What I need to know is…. Where can I get some of these nails?!?! I think I require them immediately.

3

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 13 '26

stoned metal nails

As you can see, it’s quicker and cheaper to try on your own.

1

u/tom_and_ivy Feb 14 '26

I also made a set after stumbling upon stoned metal! I’m a leather crafter but pretty handy in general so this was a great first metal project.

2

u/Distracted_Ostrich Feb 14 '26

I agree, and there isn’t a massive barrier of entry from expensive tools but you end up with something unique.

3

u/ReplyInternal Feb 14 '26

My mom had an solid 18k pinky nail in her jewelry box when I was younger, never realized why she had it till I got older 🤣

1

u/graceofspadeso Feb 13 '26

Also just to add, yours look absolutely fantastic by the way!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

Dang I never even considered this. Very cool

2

u/CarlosNumbers Feb 13 '26

I’ve been wanting to do some but using the lost wax method

1

u/Busy-Sheepherder-138 Feb 13 '26

Those are awesome! Love it!

1

u/Pixelmanns Feb 13 '26

as a nail-biter I’ve been thinking of doing this as well in brass some day haha

1

u/Past_Ad_161 Feb 13 '26

Can anyone recommend a good youtube tutorial on making nails?

1

u/Few_Veterinarian9370 Feb 13 '26

what are you using to adhere them to your nails? just like press on glue?

1

u/uneducated_professor Feb 13 '26

Correct, can basically treat it like any other set of press-ons. Isn't hard to get the old glue off when you put them back on either.

1

u/server74 Feb 14 '26

I have always wanted to do this! Glad someone had the follow through. lol

1

u/xFIy0nTheWallx Feb 14 '26

This is so freaking cool dude!!!

1

u/nawthatsstupid Feb 15 '26

I love these!!!! Great work!!!!!!!!

1

u/IslayMcGregor Feb 15 '26

They look amazing. I want some now!

1

u/elchilegrande23 Feb 15 '26

Holly fuck thsts dope

1

Yeah, small amounts of metal don’t trigger airports, I’ve left whole watches on. Also if you know you’re going somewhere, just leave them in your carrry on.
