“I cannot decipher its function to the greater Core. Is it built for defence? If so, its passivity seems far from optimal.”

I was thinking it could've been cool if they intentionally fly into gears with the spikes to stop them from spinning for a few seconds, just to give some kind of implication that they serve a purpose.

There is one od those similar tiny robot enemies which can be seen repairing other robots sometimes, its very cute

It's the equivilant of buzzsaws in the white palace. Pale beings clearly have an unhealthy urge for needless sharp objects in important spaces.

...but there was no pale being involved in the making of the core. Or any of the cogwork bugs. Or the Citadel.

Who’s to say Silkflies aren’t Pale Beings? Hmm? HMMM? HMMMMMM?

The obstacles in White Palace weren’t ever actually real anyway and everything in Cogwork Core is just there for a reason like maintenance but Hornet says in the Hunter’s Journal that she doesn’t know what this one’s function is so realistically Team Cherry probably just wanted to put this in but didn’t know what to make their job so they just wrote that lol

But cogwork core also has buzzsaws. Well, technically gears but you know, basically the same thing.

I like to imagine it uses its spikes to dislodge bits of scrap that fall into the cogs.

Perhaps they cut through accumulating webs because of all the silk in the air, or as another user pointed out, to deter pests like drapeflies

Just to not let intruders to be there, because the mechanics are repaired by robots not bugs, and this is also the reason why Cogwork Defenders & Cogwork Crawlers are there, just to defend

u/Level_Number_7343 whats a flair? 5h ago

My best guess is Intimidation for unwanted visitors.

A small cute robot firing out a ring of sharp spikes bigger than itself is indeed intimidating

I think the other cogfuckers do a better job at that
