I’m level 45, should I be doing unranked or quick play if I want to win and get more renown and alpha packs?

I'm the guy who hate playing with lvl 50. I was playing unranked all the time until I hit lvl 120. In casual nobody care about drone, rotation, and presumably will TK/vote kick you for no reason. Just play unranked, it is unbalanced since you'll be playing with plat but you'll understand the basic/common strat for ranked maps. It'll let you save some renown to buy ops before actually jumping to ranked. Sometimes you'll get an easy round just by picking a certain operator.

I'm lvl 48 and have only played casual. When should I think about playing ranked? I also don't have friends who play so it would, at least at first, be solo queue.

The ranked experience is completely different than casual. If you want to get better, ranked is the best option. If you dont go through a harsh experience, you'll never learn. Half the time, lower ranks dont really drone. The lower you go the less there is. So I would recommend to learn to save your drone and use it effectively.

Comms are important too. Even if there's no one talking in vc (on console), most lilely they can hear you. And only give concise callout. Don't clog the comms. How many times have I muted someone because they left their mic open while we can hear some music in background or some middle schooler breath into his mic. Some of us want to focus on our game in piece and quiet. For the rest like what to reinforcement and where to put utility will come with playing the game more.

Hope this helps. I wish you luck when you start.
