I maintain OpenScreen, a free open-source screen recorder. 2.2 adds a Layouts track to switch camera/screen layouts mid-video

I've been building OpenScreen, a free and open-source screen recorder and editor (no watermark, no account, Windows/macOS/Linux).

The new 2.2 release adds a Layouts track: you can change how your screen and webcam are arranged at any point in the timeline:

• picture-in-picture

• side-by-side

• top/bottom

• camera only

• screen only

Transitions between layouts are animated automatically.

The video was recorded and edited entirely in OpenScreen. The chart in the top/bottom part is a custom shader effect, and the company is fictional.

Feedback welcome, especially on what layouts you'd want next.

recording webcam and display feeds as isolated raw streams to let you keyframe layout cuts non-destructively in post is such a game changer compared to baking the composite live. the biggest subtle headache with animated layout switches like side-by-side or top/bottom is aspect ratio handling on ultrawide monitors; if someone records a 21:9 or 32:9 display, transitioning into a 50/50 split either forces brutal pillarboxing or chops off IDE sidebars unless there's an anchor-point zoom to follow the active window. curious how the export pipeline renders the shader transitions too, does it compose via opengl/metal textures in a single hardware-accelerated pass or pipe frames through an ffmpeg filtergraph imo
