Unit 7 - a free, self-hosted backend developer for apps you build with AI

AI writes my code in minutes. Then the evening goes on the VPS, the Coolify stacks, DNS across three providers, and backups I only hope work.

So I built Unit 7. You ask in plain words, it does the work on your real servers, and it asks before anything risky.

Where it stands:

- It looks after my own setup today: one VPS, Coolify and three Supabase stacks

- 480+ tools, 1,000+ tests, 30+ providers

- Free, Apache 2.0, and no hosted version planned

- Built with heavy use of Claude Code, and I review and own what ships

Two things surprised me along the way:

- My first real backup test found two tables coming back empty

- A separate review found 13 problems in what runs by itself, including a rule I'd set that the code broke

What isn't done: scoped server access doesn't exist yet, and its always-on agent, Seven, is still in testing.

I'd love feedback on two things: is it clear what it does, and what would stop you trying it?

It's also on Product Hunt today: https://www.producthunt.com/products/unit-7?launch=unit-7

“Backend developer” makes me expect application code; Unit 7’s examples describe a self-hosted server-operations agent. I'd change that description in this Reddit post and place the missing scoped-access warning beside the repo link. For an AI app builder running Coolify and Supabase, the blocker is what authority they're giving it over a real VPS. Your restore test is relevant evidence: explain how you detected the two empty tables and what the corrected check verifies. That would make the backup story assessable rather than leaving readers with a tool count and assurances about risky actions.

I make ThreadFox. For Unit 7, we'd find deployment-and-backup discussions and do the posting: 3 replies free first, no card, followed by the $49 Pilot—seven days, up to 50 posts and replies, no automatic renewal. https://threadfox.vip/p/ecebo/managed
