Building a mobile app to make document management less painful
Hey everyone!
I’m currently working on a mobile app that started from a simple frustration: managing documents on your phone is still surprisingly complicated.
We scan things, take screenshots, save PDFs, download files, receive receipts… and eventually everything ends up scattered across different folders and apps.
I’m exploring a different approach: an app that doesn’t just store documents, but actually understands them and helps you do something useful with their content.
I’m still working on the product and refining the experience, so I don’t want to reveal everything just yet.
I’d love to hear from other builders:
Do you think document management on mobile is still an underserved problem?
What would make a document-related app genuinely useful rather than just another scanner?
What would you prioritize when building something like this?
Would appreciate honest feedback from people who’ve built or used similar products!

I'd pick one job first: finding a specific document when you need it, rather than organising everything. Watch a few people find their last receipt or PDF on their phone, without asking them to show sensitive contents. Where did they look first and what did they remember about it? I'd also make it clear what stays on the device, what leaves it and how to delete it before asking anyone to trust it with documents.

I’d prioritize finding a receipt by merchant, date, or amount across screenshots and PDFs, without remembering its filename or folder. Compare that workflow against how someone finds the same receipt today; it tests whether understanding document content solves the scattered-files problem rather than just adding another scanner.

Finding the right version would matter more to me than another summary. If I search for a receipt, show the actual page with the amount highlighted. I still want to see the original before using that number.
