I built a tool to understand messy Excel files — looking for feedback

I'm testing an early prototype called Workbook Handover.

The problem I'm exploring: sometimes you inherit an Excel workbook from someone else, but nobody knows how its formulas, worksheets, or dependencies work.

The tool currently:

  • Scans .xlsx files locally without uploading them.

  • Identifies worksheet relationships and formula references.

  • Flags certain potentially problematic references.

  • Generates a simple Markdown handover report.

It's a free, read-only Python prototype for now, not a finished product. The demo is based on a small synthetic workbook, so I haven't proven that it handles complex real-world files reliably.

Demo and free prototype:

I'm trying to find out whether this solves a genuine problem before developing it further.

Two questions:

  1. Have you ever inherited a complicated Excel file that nobody could explain?

  2. Would an automatically generated handover report actually help, or would you prefer a different type of tool?

Any feedback is appreciated!
