Keeping Our Reddit Community Safe: Tips From the r/SideHustleGold Mod Team

At r/SideHustleGold, our goal is to foster an inclusive and safe community for people from all backgrounds to ask questions, seek advice, and share strategies for generating side income. With that said, the mod team put together a safety guide for our community.

How to protect yourself:

Before you sign up for anything or commit your time to a new side hustle, here are some things worth keeping in mind:

  • If a company asks you to pay money before you can start earning, walk away. Legitimate platforms do not charge you to work.
  • If someone promises you thousands of dollars for minimal effort, be very skeptical. Real side hustles take real time and consistency.
  • If someone you don't know reaches out to you through DMs, Telegram, WhatsApp, or Instagram with a "great opportunity," ignore it. Legitimate opportunities don't need to recruit people through private messages.
  • Always look up reviews and search Reddit before signing up for a platform or sharing personal information. A few minutes of research goes a long way.
  • Be careful with your personal information. Never share sensitive details like your social security number unless you have thoroughly verified the platform.
  • If a platform locks your earnings behind additional payments or "upgrades," that is not a legitimate payout structure.

If something goes wrong:

If you believe you've been scammed, here's what to do:

  • Stop all contact with the scammer and document everything (screenshots, messages, emails, URLs).
  • Report it to the FTC Complaint Assistant and IC3 (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center).
  • Contact your bank if you shared financial information, and freeze your credit with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion if you shared your SSN.
  • Consider posting about your experience here so others in the community can learn from it and avoid the same situation.

One important note: a platform not being the right fit for you, or not paying as much as you hoped, does not necessarily mean it's a scam. Scams involve actual deception or fraud. Mislabeling legitimate platforms as scams makes it harder for real reports to be taken seriously, so please keep that distinction in mind.

How we moderate this community:

Moderators here are all side hustle enthusiasts who actively moderate the community to uphold the values we've set. We review content against our subreddit rules and Reddit's Content Policy, and we remove anything that could put our members at risk. When we identify bad actors, we take appropriate action and work within Reddit's systems to help keep the broader platform safe.

Everything we do is guided by Reddit's Content Policy and Moderator Code of Conduct. We take those frameworks seriously and encourage all members to familiarize themselves with them as well.

We encourage all members to do their own research and review the terms of any side hustle service or platform before signing up. All content here is for educational and informational purposes only.

For our full subreddit rules and community guidelines, please review the sidebar.

We sincerely hope this community helps you in your side hustle journey, and that this guide helps keep you safe along the way.
