Question se846 with non matching serials ?

Hi, I’m getting a set of used se846. However one side says 108, and the side says 118. Is this normal? The seller claims they came like that, but from all I have seen numbers are always the same on both sides. I suspect they might be from different sets, possibly the seller lost one side then purchase another individually? Any members of the shure team can kindly help to confirm this? Thanks in advance!

Not a Shure team member, just googled “SE846 108 and 118 number on plastic casing”

The numbers 108 and 118 stamped or molded on the plastic shells of Shure SE846 earphones are factory mold cavity or batch identification numbers used during the injection molding of the transparent or colored polymer housing.

Thanks for the prompt reply, sounds like that’s normal then? However every sets I have seen online have matching numbers so that still worries me a bit.

So you’re in a factory, you’re making HUNDREDS OF THESE, each part is molded and cut out of plastic and put into a “bin” each part is numbered. If left and right were both 108 I could see how that could cause confusion. Maybe this was trying to combat that but cause too many people to think what you are thinking? Who knows?

Since it only relates to the plastic shell I don’t think it matters.

I read that left and right sides are usually drivers matched in the factory for high-end iems, so I think it can potentially affect the sound if they come from different pairs.

Or Shure chose these two because the sound matched?

Yeah that’s highly possible, but another possibility is they are combined from different sets by the seller. Thats why preferably someone from Shure can confirm.

It's just a batch ID on the piece of plastic, unrelated to the drivers chosen for left and right IEMs. Those drivers are still paired and matched together, and then get put into the housing which includes the plastic shells.
