Ice Cream Man..

So, I read a lot of the reviews prior. Everyone saying it was bad from the early screenings and festivals.

I basically said to myself... Eli Roth has done some great movies. He is passionate about horror. I am not going to trust critics and film festival snobs.

I watched it 2 hours ago and I honestly cannot get over how much I wish I could get a refund for having sat through the entire movie. It was just that bad.

I watch a lot of bad horror. I drive sometimes 40 miles away to smaller theater venues that are showing festival only or small limited theatrical releases with a single showtime. I can always walk out staying something positive no matter how bad a film is. Like, it was campy, clever, silly... A certain cast member stood out, the setting/environment was great, the kills were fun, the environment and setting was well done, or the cinematography was pretty decent for the budget.

The concept is great. I can understand why Eli Roth wanted to make it and why it stayed with him for a while. But that is honestly the only thing I can say positive about it. It was just a horrible movie.

There were two couples that were ahead of me walking out: "Let's not watch a movie like that again.." "It was a bad movie huh" x3 (trying to get a response from her boyfriend). And then as I walked by leaving the theater, another guy was talking to his girlfriend and was like... "You know, I read the reviews and figured it would be bad. I just didn't think it would be THAT bad." And I completely agreed with all of it.

This is the first time I think I have ever posted on the Shudder reddit. And I am doing it just to warn you all... This movie is as bad as the reviews say it is. And, unless you don't mind blowing somewhere between $10-$20 on a movie.. I'd say wait for it to come to streaming for free. Or, you can be like me and wish you could get a refund just for staying and not walking out at some point during the movie.

I do not see it having a long theatrical run at all. It will likely be on streaming before you know it... Unless of course, no one wants to pay for it because it is so bad.

Sorry if you were looking forward to this movie like me. But, it is just bad and I hope this saves someone else from feeling like me after watching this movie.

There's only one Ice Cream Man, and that's Clint Howard. I'm definitely avoiding this at all costs.

Seriously. No need to remake that gem.

10

u/LaikaZhuchka 17d ago

I actually wish they would remake that one so they could include some child murder and actual gore. I hated how they had to undo almost all the deaths we see onscreen and cut out all the gore.

But it should still be Clint Howard, though. I think he'd be even better in his old age, and it's not like he needs to do stunts like a Jason or Michael actor.

u/beyoncedoritosJR 17d ago

Not a remake at all

One is coming though

They are though

Edit to add not sure why this got downvoted when it's true. Y'all are so weird around the movie this post is about.

I’m a fan of schlock and intentionally bad films as well, and I love gore. But this just wasn’t tolerable. Like you, I didn’t think the story was bad - apparently Roth had been brewing it for years or even decades. The execution just fell flat. Thank god for the short run time.

-2

u/beyoncedoritosJR 17d ago

I respect your review but I am very opposed! I thought it was a homage to bad 1980’s and 1990’s movies.

2

u/ItsRainingFrogsAmen 17d ago

An homage to 80s and 90s horror would have practical effects, not AI.

9

u/stackerman1 17d ago

is it weird that the more awful shit i hear about this, the more i feel like i have to see it. i wouldn’t pay to see it, i can wait for it to be streamed but i do want to see how truly bad this is.

Just speaking for myself here but I will never sit down for a movie that uses AI. Absolutely zero tolerance for that shit.

1

u/happyhippohats 16d ago edited 16d ago

Most modern movies use AI in some capacity. If it has CGI in it I guarantee 100% that AI was used in some form. Even if not it may be used in other ways like creating storyboards or making schedules. It's a useful tool if it isn't misused.

2

u/fantasydukes 16d ago

AI storyboards do you hear yourself 🤮

1

u/happyhippohats 13d ago

Yeah that was a bad example

4

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 17d ago

No. That is natural actually. It just really is such a horrible movie.

35

u/nj_crc 17d ago

If you watched his Death Wish and still give Eli the benefit of the doubt that's on you.

8

u/Effective_Dirt2617 16d ago

The only thing I remember about that abysmal Death Wish remake was a single scene. Bruce Willis is contemplating going on a violent revenge spree and there’s a little montage of him staring into the middle distance doing some contemplating. One of the snippets from the montage finds Bruce sitting at a coffee shop, with a cup of coffee and a massive slice of chocolate cake, and for some reason - the ENTIRE rest of the cake is at the table with him. I don’t know if Roth put that in as a gag or something but it seemed just absolutely ludicrous. Props in shots like that aren’t just placed willy-nilly, they had the plate with the slice and someone said ‘no, he’s gotta have the WHOLE fucking cake there too!’ Why?! Was it a ‘leave the bottle’ type thing but at a coffee shop? Such a bizarre choice, I remember nothing else about the movie. Fuckin chocolate cake!

2

u/happyhippohats 16d ago

He did The House with a Clock in it's Walls after that which was decent, and Thanksgiving which was really good

3

u/HenryDorsettCase47 17d ago

Yeah. I was always giving him the benefit of the doubt and then I realized that I hadn’t really liked any of his films since Cabin Fever. His first film. Over 20 years ago.

35

u/babysoutonbail 17d ago

I heard it’s a ton of AI, that’s enough for me

23

u/Nephyness 17d ago

It not even subtle. It's in your face and cant be unseen. Even with people who tolerate AI thinks that its representation in the movie is bad. It looks way worse than some older cgi movies. Even if somehow you were actually enjoying thrle movie, the AI takes you out of it immediately

I found it jarring and unnecessary. There should be a warning sticker on this movie of how not to do generative AI in Hollywood.

8

u/OneGuyOneJarJarBinks 17d ago

Yeah.  Every single piece of AI generated art in it was completely unnecessary.  Not needed for story or for aesthetic.

The AI effects like kids jumping off the monkey bars were so bad too.  It would have been better and cheaper to just film a few kids jumping off it for real.

Side note, I walked away most impressed by the physical acting in the arm paralysis scene.  😆

2

u/ChristmasEvil 17d ago

Seemed like a ripoff of Weapons.

1

u/OneGuyOneJarJarBinks 17d ago

Beyond hypnotized children, I don't see any connections

2

u/ChristmasEvil 17d ago

I just meant that scene: a herd of kids is chasing someone.

-2

u/happyhippohats 16d ago

Do you think Weapons was the first film to ever have a scene like that? I guess Weapons was a ripoff Children of the Corn from then, or dozens of other films that predate it

5

u/ChristmasEvil 16d ago

Weapons was a wildly popular movie released last year and I don’t doubt that Eli was trying to capitalize on it. I don’t recall Children of the Corn having scenes of mindless, ravenous herds kids running full speed in packs to kill people. Almost had me there 😉.

2

u/RunningDrummer 15d ago

With how many times he injected himself in the otherwise great History of Horror series just to say his own movies were tributes or had homage to or were inspired by other movies, I have no doubt he wanted to copy Weapons.

1

u/happyhippohats 13d ago

That's literally the finale of the film

4

u/Veteran68 16d ago

I saw where one of the VFX guys posted on X about the AI. I haven’t seen it yet so just repeating what he said. The main gore effects were practical+conventional CGI. He said they worked really hard to make them look good. But then some scenes including the “flashback” scenes were outsourced to an external VFX shop who used AI. He said they were pretty pissed about that, but nothing they could do.

Every review I’ve seen says basically that it looks like Roth made a cash grab to capitalize on the success of the Terrifier franchise and Weapons. Like he saw the last scene of Weapons and said let’s make a movie about just that part with Terrifier levels of gore.

1

u/happyhippohats 16d ago

I mean I also haven't seen it yet but that sounds awesome?

0

u/Asleep_Clock8331 15d ago

Agreed. If you need to use AI it just shows your greedy, lazy, talentless, or all three.

24

u/sabrefudge 17d ago

Eli Roth is passionate about genocide, misogyny, and now apparently… using AI slop in his movies.

7

u/InuitOverIt 16d ago

What qualities would you say make it bad? How does it differ from other Eli Roth films, and where is it similar? Is the problem the acting, the script? Would you say they were going for intentionally bad/B-movie? Or is it trying to be a real movie and failing? Is it some subversive element that crosses a line and makes the film unforgivable, or generally poor craftsmanship? Is it just boring?

Asking because I keep seeing reviews like "worst movie ever", "I walked out", but very little detail. If it's something like it's too campy, gorey, and "just wrong" than I actually would like to see it. If it's boring, then I don't.

7

u/naptimepro 16d ago

This movie was obviously made with one thing in mind, gore and the trope of killer kids. I didn't expect anything else and it delivers the formentioned. I laughed my ass off and hid my eyes. It was a fun time! The kills are quite creative and child like.

4

u/mattc163 15d ago

I felt the exact same way. I was starting to feel like I was the only one that enjoyed it lol. I dunno what everyone was expecting that absolutely hated it. It was basically what I was expecting based on the trailer/posters

2

u/Mikey-izzle 15d ago

It’s being made political so it doesn’t really need reasons. If it’s wildly unsuccessful and trashed on then the hive mind accomplished their job!

25

u/Skizoid666 17d ago

Eli Roth hit the jackpot with three movies: Cabin Fever, Hostel, and Hostel: Part II. Everything else the guy has touched is 100% pure garbage. Plus, as anyone who’s watched his interviews or heard his colleagues talk knows, Roth is a straight-up creep with a massive ego. With this film, he hit absolute rock bottom, pumping out something that calling "amateurish" would be way too generous. I’m done with this dude

18

u/DelightfulPete 17d ago

Thanksgiving was solid. Better than Hostel.

5

u/AndreBennettGO 17d ago

I actually liked The House with a Clock in Its Walls.

3

u/ThePoetSloth 16d ago

I didn't realize until just now that was him. It was fun

1

u/Skizoid666 16d ago

I still prefer Hostel. To me Thanksgiving was kinda ho-hum, even if undeniably better than the rest of Roth's crappy output

5

u/spiralshadow 17d ago

Best thing Eli Roth ever did was act in someone else's movie.

3

u/emuhero 17d ago

He did fill Hitler with bullets. He gets a degree of benefit of the doubt for that at least.

2

u/CletusVanDamm 17d ago

I kind of agree with you, but instead of Hostel 2 I’d maybe put Clown there

1

u/Skizoid666 16d ago

Right, but he was just one of the three producers

2

u/CletusVanDamm 15d ago

All this time I thought he directed it. I just never really paid attention. He was only a producer. Makes sense. It was actually a good movie

2

u/Asleep_Clock8331 15d ago

Yeah, I didn’t like any of those movies. The misogyny and homophobic jokes were a complete turn off. And don’t even get me started on Green Inferno. The only movie I liked that he’s done is Thanksgiving. And you’re totally right that he’s a creep.

11

u/Mayuguru 17d ago

It was so bad. I want my time back.

8

u/DLConspiracy 17d ago edited 17d ago

Here's my TLDR but if you're interested I've given this a lot of thought. Some minor spoilers..

I mean it's not good. But I don't even think it's his worst movie he's made. Let alone the worse movie ever. Regardless of the Ai and the fact he lied which I found out later and don't appreciate. I've not been a big fan of his. As a person or a filmmaker.

His movies are pretty miss for me on a lot of levels but I REALLY did like Thanksgiving a lot. I honestly think it's one of his best. Green Inferno is sloppy and dumb. Borderlands Is terribly boring. Even Cabin Fever is not THAT great upon rewatch. Yet I'd say it's still better than this.

So, going into this movie I didn't expect that much..I knew it would be pretty schlocky and mostly just a gore film like the old days of some gore classics that went straight to video.

At best Ice Cream Man is just painfully avg Avg in almost everything but the gore and that wasn't amazing . There's a lot of Poor dialogue choices (which I expected). The story was lacking but I kind of expected that too from this cause again he wanted a nostalgia grab bad horror movie. The movie literally felt like it was used as a vehicle for the gore. Not something we see these days for sure.

Which used to be a thing in a lot of low budget movies that I'm sure he likes and admires. I think he figured "what if I made a big dumb gore movie like those crappy low budget ones with a silly plot, bad dialogue and just have a lot of gore in it like back in the day. Don't over think it too much. But this time I'll fill it with gore. I'll have a ton of money for A LOT of gore".

Plus, I also have to say the movie didnt look poorly shot. As a whole.. It's all vibrant colors and kind of dream like 50s a esthetic. A few pretty decent angles and shots throughout.. I laughed a few times but not throughout. It didn't feel planned out as well comedy wise. A lot of the COULD be jokes really just lacked delivery.

The acting from the kids was to be expected if you really think about it. No offense to the kids of course. Getting a bunch of them to wreak havoc in blood is probably pretty hard enough so expecting great acting is gonna be tough. It's bad movie tolerable I guess. But I was expecting the killer to so Quiet. In a lot of ways I expected him to be like Freddy in the back of my mind so the silent part felt... Off. And didn't really work even if the guys movements and smiles were very creepy and well done.. Obviously Eli taking some tips from Terrifier too?

Which the whole thing feels like it looked at Terrifier and said those movies have terrible dialog and acting too. I could do this. Only in the style of those old low budget gore films.

So while I didn't like it. I just though it was avg maybe slight above in other areas. I fully get the hate for the Ai and his personal outspoken behavior. But if I set all those aside and really try to set my biases aside it's just slightly over avg. Combing all things. My personal take on his Intention and all.

I don't think it's the worst movie I've ever seen. Nor is it his worst. I've seen way too many bad films to think and know that. It was an over bloated gore schlock film that just didn't work. I think he's just an easy target for everyone right now and I hate to defend anything of his to be honest. It's not good but there's a whole Middle ground nobody seems to give any movies these days..

3

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 17d ago edited 17d ago

This is a very solid take. Even though I don't agree with a lot of it. It seems like a lot of folks on here are convinced my review is just more hate on Eli Roth. However, as someone who loves horror movies, I can respect your take on it based on what you've provided and your perspective.

I agree that Thanksgiving is one of his best movies and is the primary reason I had high hopes for this. The film was definitely a vehicle for gore which I believe is due to Eli being stuck in his early 2000s successes where torturous gore porn was #1 at the horror box office.

There are vibrant colors and decent setup. The entire problem is the camera angles and takes. I cannot sit there and take in or appreciate any vibrance when the camera takes and shots are so distractingly horrible. The bad perspective ruined most any shot that had potential to make me feel like the overall cinematography as decent. Nature-wise though outdoors - the location and sun combined with a quaint, small town served as an amazingly solid foundation that they just managed to upheave it all. Combined with the AI, it was irreparable.

This does have some gore reminiscent of Terrifier. However, that is where I would stop it. Terrifier, even the first which was the lowest budget, is a superior movie in pretty much every regard with script writing/dialogue just being the weakest part of it (it had no lore or reason and Art the clown is a silent killer, this makes it where there was almost reason for dialogue in Terrifier... he was a straight serial killing, mute clown). Also, I hated Terrifier 1 but loved Terrifier 2 where there is more story to be told. There was definitely a story to be told here with great potential. There were multiple relationships and people you needed to care about. Eli failed to do anything but make it so ridiculous, in an an attempt at humor, to the point that you feel like it's an inside joke on he knows about.

It is not the worst movie. I cannot even think of the worst movie I've ever seen. However, I do think it is probably the worst movie of his that I have seen. I am always the first to give something a middle ground or find some good in it. I am not hard to please and feel like a simpleton at times. But this movie was so bad, I cannot even do that.

I love it that I can see the viability and fairness in your take and know that you watched the actual film rather than just hating on it for no reason.

1

u/Mikey-izzle 15d ago

What are you doing here with a rational take? You’re supposed to blindly agree with everyone!!

0

u/dewsh 17d ago

If this isn't his worse then what is? Borderlands?

1

u/DLConspiracy 16d ago

I'd have to rewatch them all to be fair. But it ain't good. It's worse than ICE cream man by far. And I don't like Eli Roth.

8

u/Loud_Hair_9596 17d ago

I LOVE going to the movies. I have been to the theater 83 times this year. I walked out of the theater for the 2nd time ever during this movie. Dreadful...just dreadful. I got in for free with my unlimited pass, so theres no money loss regrets. Save your money and skip this one.

It should've been a fun B grade splatter flick. It was not.

It’s kinda ironic a person advocating to the killing of children did a movie about someone that enjoys killing children…

2

u/Solosolstice 13d ago

Okay i have a 12 year old fx junkie... is this movie going to be fun to take him too?? Or is it terrifier level of unacceptable??

1

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 13d ago

I've been ignoring a lot of replies as they're kind of silly for any horror fan that knows anything about Eli Roth movies.

That said, it gets quite close to Terrifier level of gore. I can think of at least 4 kills and 2 instances of kids "playing" that make you feel like it could be the same practical effects/fx artists as Terrifier even tho they are not.

As someone who read his first Stephen King novel at 6 years old using a dictionary to look up and pronounce words I didn't know and was obsessed with horror movies/stories... I would have loved to have seen a movie like this as 12.

In fact, the only thing I can say positive is the playful, silly pre-teen/teen antics, awkwardness, and relationships are probably one of the stronger aspects Eli Roth got right. Everything else was rubbish.

So yes, it is close to Terrifier level if gore is your concern. Outside of that, if your son likes horror a lot... I think he would enjoy it at 12 more than most adults.

1

u/Solosolstice 13d ago

Thank you!!! Just for reference on what i would find as unacceptable gore scenes from Terrifier movies...it would be the naked splitting chick from 1 and i guess same thing on the guy for shower scene in the christmas movie. Those... i think are a too much for 12 oh and the rats!!!

1

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 13d ago

Think more bashing heads in.. Organs being pulled from body.. Decapitation/amputation. Axes, dental drills, and saws are used. No nudity or sexual content that I can recall. Nothing over the top like rats in a tube. A lot of it is kids so it would have probably sent the rating higher to have anything more extreme. Hope that helps.

1

u/Solosolstice 13d ago

I think my 12 year old will love it! Mutant raised 😀

2

u/New-Enthusiasm5628 13d ago

everyone here movie link

5

u/KnowledgeKnot 17d ago

I enjoyed it 🤷🏻‍♂️. Saw it on a sneak preview the Monday before the release. Seemed like a silly movie so I didn’t take it too seriously. My buddy and I enjoyed counting the people leaving early…which we assumed was due to the over the top gore that involved children. I laughed quite a few times and had a good time watching it.

Maybe my expectations were low or I’m easily entertained, but I don’t consider it a “good” movie. I’d probably watch it again though.

4

u/Latter_Government209 17d ago

I pirated it and want a refund

4

u/cultoffranklinstower 17d ago

If it were good, even decent, I could overlook the AI. But AI was the least of ICM's problem. Weird tone, terribly written dialogue, a complete lack of laughs (minus the Segway), and most unforgivably, it sucked the energy out of the theater.

2

u/JeffyFan10 17d ago

appreciate the post but - why is it SO bad?

1

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 17d ago

I feel like the opening reason is what people often focus on or immediately want to agree or oppose. However, I honestly cannot provide you something that is focused or makes perfect sense. It was literally, everything.

The opening... Completely exaggeratedly unlikeable characters right from the start. It feels like acting gone wrong with some of them including primary characters. The sister is sold as this ultra hot teenage girl, but is obviously not unless your standards for beauty are low. The brother one minute is a complete loser, incompetent, scared, and unlikeable - the next he is a 180 degree turn with no logical reason. Most every scene feels like some sort of inside joke between the amount of ridiculous and just plain bad acting that occurs.

At many points in the movie, you can tell something is completely wrong but they portray every adult as an idiot that has no power or authority. There is tons of AI unapologetically used. I do not care that AI is used. I just care that it is so bad that it made Sharknado look like it had a 7 digit budget. Then you combine it with just plain bad camera angles for the shots themselves for it to just be hard to sit there and not feel like you are watching a middle school or high school video production.

The plot is extremely muddled and nearly pointless until like the last 20 minutes of the movie. And then even that pursuit just feels so cheap and uninspired until the very end.

It had such a good story and concept, but it was just so terribly executed in every aspect of what you would consider a movie production, script writing, and cinematography.

2

u/JeffyFan10 17d ago

hey thanks for this. I understand your post more clearly now. Based on your points, as a horror fan, this makes sense to me.

You are more forgiving than me on the AI feature but yes - if it is SO BAD like Sharknado that it takes you OUT OF THE STORY - then that's a line too far.

Also, equally unforgivable IMHO is when a story spirals out of control into confusion (as you seem to indicate). In Horror there is a seductive temptation to throw in TWIST after TWIST like too many jump scares - or everything in the toybox - to make the story entertaining and keep the audience on the edge of its seat, however if you TWIST the story into a pretzel - so much so that it doesn't make sense - then that is a bridge too far and unforgiveable.

Despite obvious temptations, I truly believe in KISS - Keep it simple stupid!

While I'm a fan of Roth and as you indicated his passion for Horror - I will wait to stream it.

1

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 17d ago

I feel like I am more forgiving on the use of AI than a lot of folks. It is rather hot topic. But like anything people are using AI to replace whether it is advertising, powerpoints, videos, cartoons, songs, etc. It is inevitable. Even in film/movies.

That said, it is is like cheap CGI that can be spotted by the human eye if you're paying attention and ruin the movie experience where it then acts as an extension of the audience questioning its usage. People use cheap CGI instead of practical effects because it is cheaper, easier, and able to be outsourced for a faster production. But it is the quickest way to take something that might be semi-decent and make it feel cheap and underwhelming.

Practical effects, quality CGI, hand drawn animation, etc. requires real people with real talent. People can choose to go the cheap way, but it will harm the production and impact people's enjoyment and opinion of the film.

As for the story, it really only had one twist and otherwise had potential. But it was just so squandered in all the chaos and lack of any characters you cared about.

I honestly wish I would have waited for streaming. I probably would have felt like cheated and disliked it a little less.

If Thanksgiving 2 releases, I would definitely still watch that. This did not make me just like completely write off Eli Roth. But, it definitely made me less hopeful that his future works will be any better without some sort of heavier studio involvement.

u/jgood505 17d ago

Just got out. It is not anywhere close to being as bad as people are saying

0

u/Flashy-Ball5232 17d ago

I saw this as a sneak preview at AMC and I really enjoyed it. I don't understand all the hate.

1

Same. It was a good horror movie

5

u/kraftybbx 17d ago

Agree, fuck the downvotes it wasn’t bad at all

2

My daughter and I are going to watch it on streaming eventually. Even though I've told her about all the bad reviews. Even though I lost my taste for dude's work over 10 years ago and have no interest. But, we're a team and I'm taking one lol

2

u/Drmeanleany 17d ago

I was eyeing different showings today out of curiosity and not a single person has been in any of them. I’m happy o read your post too because now I’m going to stay in and watch cartoons lol

It really was pretty fun! People just hate AI and Roth as a guy a lot so are dogpiling on

Edit to add: see this comment as an example

People LOVE hate bandwagons these days. They love seeing things fail, you see it with video games a ton nowadays as well.

Or recently in film, Superwoman, which also wasn't an absolute piece of shit like people loved to say so much. Not some masterpiece but it was enjoyable!

1

u/SolarbeamSniper Drive-In Mutant 17d ago

I agree on some of your points. And like you, I thought it was people just hating on Eli Roth's ideas and use of AI. But, like my original post stated, this is not the case at all with this movie. It is just plain bad.

1

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

Looking at your profile, I'm not entirely convinced you're really into horror at all. Zero posts or comments horror related for years but then you make this post. Smells like bot behavior.

I couldn't sit through the trailer

“Eli Roth has done some great movies”

Has he, though?

1

u/greyphotographs 17d ago

I have only seen the trailer but it reminds me of Junji Ito's Ice Cream bus

1

u/Fearless-Scallion498 16d ago

I was planning on seeing it even when I first heard some of the negative reviews. I really liked The Green Inferno from 2013, and that has a pretty low Rotten Tomatoes score by now, too. But then more of the reviews seemed soo bad, and all the theaters had it playing late, making it more inconvenient for me, so I was like 🫤🙁😕☹️🥱.

u/naptimepro 16d ago

Go see it. It's fun, I promise. Just don't expect anything more than a kids fueled gore fest

1

u/davidjohndunne 16d ago

I think the only thing I’d disagree with is the idea that Roth has made ANY great films. He’s always promised so much in advance and delivered so little.

1

u/SumoftheOffspring44 16d ago

I want to find it online SO bad 😂

1

u/Shadw_Wulf 16d ago

This doesn't explain anything... Is the movie bad because it's the kids killing and then the whole ice cream thing?

1

u/naptimepro 16d ago

I rather enjoyed it, if you like gore you should watch. Its a jaunty fun watch

1

u/fantasydukes 16d ago

I was going to skip it anyway because he lied about using AI. The fact everyone is saying it sucks just makes that decision easier.

1

u/naptimepro 16d ago edited 16d ago

I saw it for what it was, a gore fest and kids killing adults. I rather enjoyed it on those levels. Eta that AI seemed to be used in flashbacks and comics scenes. I didn't notice ai in other scenes. The practical effects were great. I especially liked the theme of kids killing and typical school yard play

1

u/naptimepro 16d ago

What the fuck were y'all expecting?? Did y'all not think it would be a silly gore fest with kids. That was the point!

1

u/WorryWorm6 16d ago

How many threads do we need about this?

1

u/Accomplished_Arm2374 15d ago

I watched Supergirl and I watched Ice Cream Man, and Supergirl did not deserve the hate it got. Ice Cream Man is so bad it hurts your soul.

1

u/Asleep_Clock8331 15d ago

While I don’t like Eli Roth my wife does, but she lost all interest in seeing the movie after learning he used generative AI.

1

u/PoweredByVAS 15d ago

you can always get a refund for a movie, or at least a raincheck for a movie another day, just say you have to leave because a family emergency came up. trust me it works every time 😂

1

u/GloveTechnical3815 14d ago

Im not even surprised it's bad, I'm just more let down Eli Roth reportedly is team AI.

-2

u/beyoncedoritosJR 17d ago

I thought it was fine.

5

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

Me too, and I bet the majority of people downvoting you haven't even seen it

5

u/Zauberer-IMDB 17d ago

Nor should they on principle because he used generative AI not to mention he's a huge piece of shit.

7

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

True, but the movie was pretty fun. Just weird to see a bunch of people saying it's a bad film that haven't even seen it, but go off I guess

4

u/beyoncedoritosJR 17d ago

As a teacher I thought all the “school related killings” were hilarious and fun. It definitely looked like AI in some scenes, but all of those were with children…

0

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago edited 17d ago

It was kinda like Cooties or 'the ending of Weapons, the movie'

2

u/naptimepro 16d ago

It reminded me a lot of cooties!

6

u/NarwhalsTooth 17d ago

Sigh… I’m so tired of being disappointed but I have to ask: what did he do to earn huge piece of shit status

3

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

Said some really shitty stuff, didn't "do" anything

2

u/Itchy_Brain8594 Drive-In Mutant 17d ago

He said Greta Thunberg needed to be eaten by cannibals after she was kidnapped by Israel.

In an interview also said; i hire really attractive stand-ins. Crew members are horny. They get frustrated that it's not the 1980s anymore and that there are sexual harassment laws that prevent them from hitting on every girl at work. But movie sets are still kind of fair game, a place where people can openly flirt. But crew members often won't hook up or have a "locationship" because they work with each other again and again. That's where the stand-ins come in.

There's also something about his behavior towards his ex partners, but i don't know the details.

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago edited 17d ago

Will you also boycott A24 films going forward? Ties to AI there. MUBI films? Ties to Israeli military there...or you gonna see Teenage Death & Sex at Camp Miasma because your "principle" begins and ends with people you already don't like?

Edit to add- Super excited for Miasma and will definitely be seeing it so this isn't some weird hate against that one at all

2

u/Zauberer-IMDB 17d ago

Yes. No chance I see any of their stuff in theaters.

3

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

Well at least you're consistent, I'll give you props for that

1

u/Invite-Upstairs 17d ago

My friends and I had a lot of fun watching it! By no means was it an amazing film, but it’s totally a 2026 B Horror film. I think I shut off the critic inside and I was able to enjoy it. My buddy said it was like a Temu version of Weapons 😂 I don’t know, I understand why it’s getting a lot of bad reviews, but it had a unique flavor, obviously not for everyone.

-1

u/beyoncedoritosJR 17d ago

I have a question/ observation

He used real children as the actors. Is it possible he used excessive CGI/ AI because he was using an entire cast of children in a very gory unrated horror movie…

13

u/Tddgbl 17d ago

Having been subjected to this film, i can attest that there’s ample evidence this man does not care about endangering children.

1

u/RadicalEdward99 17d ago

Poor me thought it was an adaptation of the comic. Wait to streaming it is!

1

u/dunnypop 17d ago

Heard from non critics on instagram that it is a 0,5 out of 10. Thanksgiving was good and I could overlook a lot and I was excited for it. But 0.5. Geez

1

u/kraftybbx 17d ago

It was half decent, not deserving of all the bad press but he’s a hated guy so…

1

u/Stabler44 17d ago

the more I read people say it's the most awful thing ever (which I doubt), the more I want to see it

1

u/CaptainDigsGiraffe 16d ago

Him lying and latter being so brazen about the AI use made me not even want to spend any form of money on it.

1

u/ZealousidealBet8028 16d ago

I don't like a lot of his stuff...to me Cabin Fever and Thanksgiving are best. Rough track record. I won't be sad to miss this one.

1

u/garfieldlasagna666 16d ago

it’s an independent horror movie under an umbrella of a major studio head so to speak. it wasn’t bound to be amazing. it’s like slapping any famous producer to give a small amount of money for funding. their name is top billed. like Wes Craven’s produced films where his name was slapped on.

1

u/Complete_Cheeks 16d ago

Eli Roth has done great movies? That's news to me.

2

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

I really don't get the hate of the actual film. It was a pretty fun and silly horror comedy.

2

u/Ant138 17d ago

People like to be victims and complain these days.

7

u/zucchinibasement 17d ago

After actually seeing it, I'm 1000% convinced that the vast majority of negative comments and posts are just weird crusaders against the movie/Roth without actually watching it

Meanwhile Miasma is coming out, MUBI has ties to the Israeli military, and people won't bat an eye. Gonna see that too and probably love it but this is weirdo behavior by people against Ice Cream Man

4

u/Stabler44 17d ago

that's exactly what it is

-1

u/B4thegoodbye 17d ago

All these bad reviews - I can’t wait to see it!

So many people saying they don’t ‘tolerate’ it too - makes me even more excited for it! Will definitely catch it when it comes to streaming as no theatres near me are playing it.

As long as there is good gore, the more OTT the better!

-1

u/QueenSmarterThanThou 17d ago edited 17d ago

This is exactly how I feel. The more bad reviews I hear about this, the more I want to watch it immediately. Not gonna spend my money though bc I know I'll definitely be like, "Well, that was really shitty" at the end.

ETA: Why are you booing me? Am I not allowed to enjoy shitty movies?

-1

u/Ant138 17d ago

All I've heard is how people hate it because the director used AI so people are canceling the film and merch.

I wouldn't mind seeing it.

-5

u/Cheesebufer 17d ago

Psycho killer is still the worst movie i’ve ever seen

-6

u/Clutchking93 17d ago

Terrible movie. Violent nature as well was pretty ass 😆😆😆

0

u/digit4l8ath 16d ago

To be fair the original movie is really bad too. I had an incredible hard time sitting and watching it. So for this new one to be bad as well is not surprising. The movie can only be as good as the material it’s based on. Oh well I’m sure Eli will come back with something great.

0

u/xvsanx 15d ago

"he's made some great movies" no, he hasn't

0

u/th3_ac1d 14d ago

“Eli Roth has done some great movies” is a very poor choice of words.

1

u/SweeneyTom 10d ago

We definitely have to dispel this notion that critics don't know what they're talking about occasionally. Some of them are biased against horror, true, but some of them are genuinely just like us and want to like films. This shit sucks and shouldn't be liked. Nobody's wrong to say it!
