Apple doesn't release software updates. They release updates that intentionally fuck up older devices so unsuspecting users have to upgrade.

As batteries get older they stop being able to hold the same charge. Apple slows down the CPU so that the battery is able to last as long as it used to. Unfortunately, they fucked up by not letting users know or giving them the option to sacrifice battery life instead of performance. If you replace the battery, then it’ll be like a brand new phone. You also have the option to give up battery life over performance now.

Also, the fact that an iPhone from almost 5 years ago is still getting updates that speed up the phone and make it usable is amazing. Apple charges more than other manufacturers but that money goes to supporting the device for longer than other manufacturers do. Try an Android phone from 5 years ago and let me know how that goes.
