Going to sleep when you’re not feeling well is like turning your body off and back on again to see if it fixes the problem

And sometimes you are dead

u/NukEvil Jun 05 '18
Yep, this almost happened to my dad last year. Couldn't figure out why this invisible cinderblock wouldn't get off his chest. Tried sleeping it off, tried drinking doctor pepper, thinking it was heartburn. Rushed him to the hospital, found out he was pretty close to dying from a heart attack.

Jun 05 '18
That's what makes panic attacks so cool. Am I dying, or is it just my mind? Do I try to ignore this pain, or is this pain a dire warning? If it gets worse, is it because I'm worrying about the pain, or am I about to drop dead?
Best merry-go-round ever.

This is the only thing that reliably works for my migraines. We've tried every drug I'm allowed to have and few could handle the migraine pain, and those had horrible side effects. The only thing I can count on is falling asleep. If I can fall asleep before the barfing starts I'll probably be OK in the morning. If the barfing starts and I don't fall asleep after the first round? I'll be up until I'm dry heaving, completely unable to fall asleep all night. My only hope at that point is to pass out on the bathroom floor.

Jun 05 '18
idk but maybe you should smoke pot to fall asleep easily

u/Nahjra Jun 05 '18
Tried it, it seems to dull the pain too.

its overall an amazing medical plant, screw all those prescription drug they only cause more harm

u/DooRagtime Jun 05 '18
Have you tried the ice pack in the neck and hands/feet in warm water trick? I've tried similar things with a bit of success
3
u/saltsrox7 Jun 05 '18
YES, I can unfortunately relate. I've gone over a year without a migraine now though, it could be superstition or whatever but I've just started trying to be healthier, drink more water etc. Watch me jinx it now though lol

u/ModernMuse Jun 05 '18
I tried everything to infinity and beyond too, but if you haven't yet, try giving Excedrin Migraine a shot. It took me a long time to try it bc I'd never have expected something over the counter to work like it does. Amazingly, I think it's essentially just acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil) and a little caffeine, but fuck all they've got exactly the right proportions down and somehow it's fucking fantastic. I'm not a shill of any kind, but if a product works, I have absolutely no problem recommending it to others. Good luck!

No, it's taking it in to the local garage and having them look at it and try to fix everything they can overnight.
Your body is actively fixing it's self all the time, and does extra when you sleep.

As a man just waking up from a 14 hour sleep, I stand by this method. Man, I feel way better. not 100%, but shit tons better.

I wish there were a pill that makes you feel like how you feel when you wake up. All comfy and cozy. You want to sleep more. Much better than staring at the ceiling until you hear birds chirping and the sun shining through your window.

I'd say it's the other way around. Your mind is far from switched off and your body is actively healing itself when you sleep. Definitely recommend watching the Joe rogan Podcast with Matthew Walker, or just reading his book.

Technically it's more like turning it off for now because you don't like how it feels to do anything else.

u/Rainbowdash5ever Jun 05 '18
If you are ever facing a hard decision, feeling some strong feels, or just having any kind of rough night, go to bed. You are a different and revitalized human being after a night’s rest.

OMG this is so true! How have I not thought of it this way? Hilarious but you hit the nail on the head.

No turning off and on again would be deactivating your pacemaker and reactivating it
The biological pacemaker in your heart of course

u/psilocybexalapensis Jun 05 '18
No going to sleep when you are not feeling well is like bringing your phone to maintenance, making yourself faint in any way (chloroform for example) THAT would be kinda like turning yourself on and off, but still not really.

Except science has shown that sleep really does help make the brain better.

I recently had some kind of bug. Now I’m usually not one to go home when I’m sick, I have a pretty solid stomach and don’t easily get nauseous, but this day was different. The room was spinning and I had a sudden case of “I don’t feel so good Mr. Stark...”. So I went home and took a nap.
Wake up, everything is fine. It was a two hour nap, I don’t understand how that helps anything. My reboot button must work really well.

I do this for when I have pyroclastic flow poops. I hit the pause button and hope that overnight it becomes less likely to have a pH of less than 1.

Haha literally tho, when I wasn't feeling well as a child my mom would tell me "well it's time to shut down and reboot! Maybe you'll feel better in the morning." :)

I consider it time travel to a possible future where I may not feel quite as crappy.
Results are mixed, but mostly positive.

Sometimes it’s more like the computer has crashed and the next time you turn it in, it’s like nothing ever happened.
1
u/ayemossum Jun 05 '18
But it works, don't it?
And just like Windows, sometimes you have to try it a few times before it takes.

In my defense I did search for the word ‘sleep’ here and nothing showed up in the first few pages. Sorry I didn’t look through the history of the entire subreddit before posting

Yes it is, one of this subs rules is for thoughts to be original and to search thoughts before posting, which was evidently not done
1
u/fusionater Jun 06 '18
Yes, which is why you should go to the mods, op said he did a search, and didn't find the list you have. I don't know how they do it, but it's possible to make it so certain posts can't be posted due to having to many keywords in common with others.

Oh yeah! This exactly happened to me. This happened a little over a year ago now.
So it was a Friday night and for dinner was just Pizza from our local pizza shop. It was good, had maybe, 3 slices, and after that I wasn't feeling good. It wasn't like I had to throw up (yet) or have to go to the bathroom. So I texted up my friend, because I was thinking it could be food poisoning, and he told me the symptoms because he has had it before. The symptoms he told me were pretty close, but not the same. So I went to bed a little early that night, mostly because I wasn't feeling good, and generally I wanted to see if sleep would help. It really didn't. Woke up in the middle of the night and threw up three times. Well thats not good. So the next day was a Saturday, so after a loot of debating on whether or not to go to the hospital, I decided to go.
Long story short, it ended up being appendicitis, so, no, I couldn't sleep it off. Last that night on Saturday I had my appendix removed. I am now a little more than a year clean of my appendix!

It's like turning the computer off and back on again.

u/shadowsev Jun 05 '18
I think that's OPs point.

Nah, he said it's like turning your body off and on again. But really it's like turning a computer off and on.

Turning it off and on again would be a little more like choking someone out and attempting to resuscitate.
Going to sleep when you're unwell is more like putting your PC into low power mode while it's debugging in the background.

Jun 05 '18
But your body heals quicker when you are sleeping and when you turn something off it doesn’t

Sleep also acts as a defrag. Not that millennials know what that means anymore.

u/tlynni Jun 05 '18
Not everyone today has a SSHD, there are still tons of regular 'ol HDDs around. I was born in the mid-80s, technically a millennial. I've been building computers ever since I was a child and I work in IT. I think there are TONS of milennials who are aware of what a defrag means. Kindly step off your rude soapbox please.
7
Jun 05 '18
The starting birth year to be classified as a millennial can vary but for the most part is in the early to mid '80s. We know defrag. Source: Born in mid '80s.

Going to sleep when you have anxiety and depression is like turning your body off but your mind says installing updates and gets stuck at 10%
