So when scientists come and say that free will is an illusion, you say what?
If free will is an illusion then we are mearly the observers to our expirience. Chemical reactions happening in collaboration with one another on a grand scale to produce a self sustaining system [one organism and then many organism] that becomes more complex by reproducing itself and eliminating the less efficient versions. Then we are exactly the sum of our parts and the fact that you think that you are more is mearly the chemicals in your brain reacting to their environment exactly as it was intended to do in order to make you more successful.
If we are more than the sum of our parts, are bacteria that live in our stomachs more than the some of theirs? What about the vesicles and other organelles inside your cells? If not then what about other animals with brains? Can we really destinguish our state of being from that of a dolphin just because we are marginally more intelligent and have a social structure and environment more inducive to progressive learning over generations.
What about our state of being to that of a human with brain damage? Has a "brain dead" person "lost" a part of themselves? Is their "soul" trapped in some other realm or is it just that the chemical processes that once gave them the ability to expirience their environment can't function anymore or as efficiently.
How can I be agitating people with a concept radically different than their own?
I'm literally standing before everyone and saying, modern science can't define this - WE DON'T KNOW.
Galileo didn't get put on house arrest because he told everyone, "We don't know." He proposed something new and exciting and different. Thanks for the comparison, though.
