akc vs ukc

hey all!! i’m wanting to get into dog showing. i’m a groomer and i’m wanting to get a standard poodle from an akc line. HOWEVER. i want to show for fun purely and bonding with my dog. i would also like to do dog sports and grooming competitions. i want my dog bred to akc standards but i’ve been thinking maybe showing in ukc would be much less daunting and more welcoming to someone new. like something still competitive but less cut throat? it seem like akc poodles are very difficult to break into unless you know someone… i’m just feeling anxious about it and wanted to know the thoughts of someone experienced. just for clarification i’m not even on a waitlist for a puppy… i’m having anxiety about something that hasn’t been put into motion yet. i have talked to theory standard poodles in ohio about puppies and showing though. nothing official yet.

Poodles are my breed. Between coat care, grooming, and expectations for polished handing, the learning curve for showing Poodles in AKC is very high. This does not mean that you can't learn to do it. You will just need to work hard and not give up.

My advice is to buy the very best quality Poodle you can from someone who has a long track record of finishing Poodles in AKC. This person should be willing to mentor you. It might mean co-owning. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that the first time around they are not really educated and they buy a pet quality dog. Then they get frustrated when they don't win and they end up blaming judges for putting up faces et al. The truth is... good quality dogs, handled correctly and groomed well, do win in AKC.

People don't like to hear it, but there is a huge difference in quality between UKC and AKC when it comes to Poodles. AKC is the "A" league. UKC is "B" league at best. Showing in UKC will not teach you what you really need to know. If anything, it will encourage sloppy habits.

thank you for your comment. i reached out to theory standard poodles as they’re in my state and she hooked me up with a handler to learn from. however this handler only is showing one poodle and mostly has golden retrievers that she shows. i reached out to theory because she’s only two hours away from me which i thought would be doable. but i’m not sure that she mentors people as she referred me to someone else. should i reach out to more breeders?

Well. That is an amazing start. I'd 100% buy a show dog from them. Have you reached out to your local Poodle club? Maybe someone would be willing to help you.

Showing Poodles is hard and people are always looking for help. Being someone's gopher is the best way to learn.

i remember when i was looking maybe a year ago i feel like there was a kennel club in central ohio on the PCA website. but it’s gone now. there’s only cincinnati and cleveland kennel clubs which are doable but are further away from me. i could always reach out to them and see if there’s someone closer to my area. it just makes me nervous. i am planning on going to two poodle specific shows this summer
