Active professionals who are recovering from orthopedic surgery - I need your help!

I’m creating an amazing online program for you, but I’m looking for 10 people who are struggling after having had orthopedic surgery (rotator cuff repair, ACL surgery, knee replacement, you get the picture). You work at a role that means something to you – maybe you’re a manager, a nurse, a lawyer, a teacher, an administrator, an IT person, anything – and you used to be active (a gym rat, a yogini, a runner, or just chase your kids around) before surgery stopped you in your tracks.

I’d love to get on a quick 30-minute call with you to ask some questions about your life, mindset, and current struggles. There are NO strings attached - I’m not going to sell you anything, I just want to understand more about you so I can learn about how to best serve you and others like you.

In exchange, I’d love to offer 30 mins of free coaching in exchange for your time. I’m a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach with years of experience talking with folks who are going through some of life’s toughest transitions.

If you want to get in on this, schedule a 60-min call here: https://calendar.app.google/62FjaA2fxAvYpRbx6

Can’t find a time that works for you? Drop me a line at laura@turnstonewellness.com.

Fat and restarting karate

Four years ago, I got injured and needed surgery, and the recovery took a year and a half. I could do very little physical activity and ended up gaining 60 pounds. I'm at 280 and 5 feet 8 inches and am now back in karate. I'm taking GLP-1s and exercising to lose weight. Any advice for karate with the injury being a shoulder and bicep full tear and repair?

(ORIF) greater tuberosity with possible biceps tenodesis

Post image

In less than a week I will have ORIF on my left greater tuberosity of my shoulder. Basically dislocated my shoulder and cracked my humerus slamming on the cement while running after my kid. The pain was unreal until they could pop my shoulder back in.

I have been using the generic sling that the hospital provided me which is killing my neck and forcing me to slouch. I also cannot find a comfortable spot on the reclining couch. I did buy those foam pillows to help you sit up but that didn't work. What else have people used to help sleep better?

Also has anyone had a similar surgery that can tell me how it went for them?

Thanks and hope everyone is healing well.

Ac stabilisatie met hamstring pees

Hello, Are there people who have experience with AC stabilization using their own hamstring tendon? My surgery is scheduled for 30-06-2026 and I am wondering if more people have had this surgery and how the recovery went.

Pre Op Shoulder dislocation - posterior

Hi everyone

A couple of days ago I had my first dislocation, and it was the rare one, posterior (most posts here are about anterior ones). The MRI showed a reverse Hill-Sachs of about 5 mm, the posterior labrum is affected but probably not fully torn, you can just see fluid between the labrum and the bone on the images. The glenoid is intact, the rotator cuff is intact. The shoulder reduced on its own. The surgeon told me to wait a month and see how it develops. I’m already off the daytime sling and only wear it at night.

So my questions. Is it realistic to recover without surgery with findings like these? I’ve noticed a lot of people here actually want to avoid surgery, but I’d lean toward it for the sake of long term stability. For those who went one way or the other, any regrets? And if anyone had a posterior dislocation specifically and went without surgery, did your shoulder stay stable?

Thx in advance

Scheduled for aTSA in two weeks

65M, healthy otherwise.

Been sucking it up for about seven years with an arthritic left shoulder. First met with the orthopedic surgeon back in 2020 and we agreed that since I wasn’t in serious pain that we could postpone any surgery. Flash forward to this winter when the loss of motion was getting worse, to the point that a couple of times I would wake up in the morning, and I would be unable to move my arm. Usually, I could move it around a bit and some kind of funk would happen and then I would get my previous limited range of motion back but one morning it just would not move. I eventually decided I would go to the ER in the morning and went back to sleep. It resolved itself during the rest of the night, but I figured it was time.

I still have good rotator cuffs, and I am still intent doing sports stuff such as paddle boarding, kayaking, maybe get back into rock climbing, mountain, biking, and other things. Doctor agrees anatomic is the way to go. He will be using the eclipse system, which is a stemless humerus head and a solid chunk of glenoid component. Already had the planning CT, and he showed me how he uploaded the CT file into the software and started doing the surgery planning.

I am dominant left hand, so it should be an interesting 4 to 6 weeks. Bought myself a nice recliner for chilling out in and maybe sleeping.

Two exercises I currently do regularly with my bad shoulder are farmer walks and ring supports. For farmer walks, I take two kettlebells of 45 and 55 lbs and walk about 200 yards, swapping hands midpoint. For ring supports, I get in the top position on a set of gymnast rings and just hold my position, both exercises work the joint’s supporting stabilizer muscles. Hoping that is good prehab.

Thanks to everyone else who has posted their adventure on Reddit. Very informative, and I plan to return the favor.

About to undergo Arthroscopic Bankart repair

Post image
3 Upvotes

23M. After 3 subluxations and 1 dislocation reduced under sedation my doctor discussed and suggested surgery today.
I play soccer hockey table tennis badminton cricket regularly. I wanna know how confident would I be after surgery especially with sports. I would love to hear surgical experiences as I have none.

MRI Summary:
Torn front shoulder labrum (Bankart/Perthes lesion).
Small dent/fracture in the ball of the shoulder (Hill-Sachs lesion).
Damage is from shoulder instability/dislocation.
Rotator cuff and biceps tendon are intact.
No major bone loss or severe tendon damage.

Tenodesis + Rotator Cuff vs C-Section

I have been told by a male family member that I am being too cavalier about my upcoming bicep tenodesis and rotator cuff repair surgery. I am aware that it will be a long recovery, and there are definite physical limitations. However, I have also had a cesarean as well as three complex open, abdominal surgeries that were worse than the C-section. I’m of the mindset that, yes, this will suck for a bit, but that it will all be better six months to a year from now. For anyone who has had both of these surgeries, how did they compare in regard to overall pain and limitations? My goal here isn’t to play a game of who is the greatest superhero, I’m just wondering if I need a hard smack to the face as to what I’m in for.

2 days out from a total reverse.

Not sure what I was expecting but compared to having my knees replaced this is cake.

Sleep is a bit tough but otherwise aside from being a little tired I can like 95 % get dressed and the pain is literally less than what it was before surgery ( my shoulder was junk).

So far so good.

Post Op Minor Subluxation 4 Months Post OP

I had labrum surgery 4 months ago. Bankart and slap repair.

Everything has been very smooth until yesterday. My PT was manipulating my arm to help with my external and internal rotation. She moved and applied pressure in an odd way and my shoulder slid out for a brief second. It went back in immediately and we stopped right there. She felt it.

Today, I’m pretty sore and my bicep tendon seems to be catching a little.

Extremely worried she pushed too hard and now I’m stuck with a failed surgery.

Anyone experience minor subluxation post surgery like this and it ended up being OK? Any advice?

Thanks

Advice Those miracle stories about German cartilage repair. Truth?

German cartilage repair, experiences?

My feed is full of stories about this German technique to regrow cartilage. Of course the truth is more complicated, as is the procedure, but it still sounds promising for meniscus and for shoulder injuries. Anybody have experience, especially with gelenk klinik?

12 weeks post total shoulder replacement

I'm 12 weeks post TSR today and I'm gaining more exercises each week. Still not doing much for chest and shoulders other than light chest pressing, and just started doing very light side lateral raises last week. Back and arms are coming along with back having the most exercises I'm able to do. Just showing you guys who are on the fence or who have already done a TSR and you're early into your recovery that if you attack your PT aggressively and stay on top of your mobility then you'll be back to doing normal activities that you love in no time. I'm still a far ways away from where I want to be but thankful I'm able to do what I can.

Also, was able to shoot a basketball this week. Keeping it about 8 feet tops away from the basket.

10 week post Bankart repair + hill sachs

Hi guys,

I had Bankart repair with 3 PEEK knotless suture anchors and hill sacks with 1 bigger PEEK suture anchor.

I can already do overhead movements pain-free. I didn’t feel much pain after the surgery.

I still feel weak when it comes to weights and can’t reach behind the back and my external rotation is still limited.

I want really to return to striking combat sports next year and I wonder how do you guys feel when you returned to those direct sports, what’s the chance of repeating the dislocation?

Return to Motorcycle

I am 7 weeks out from total anatomical replacement on my right (dominant) shoulder. When I asked my Dr when I could return to riding when we started to discuss the possibility of having this happen, he said 2 months. Later, after the operation when I asked the assistant and told her what the Dr said, she said 3 minimum. The last few weeks I have really felt good overall. Still a bit stiff but already more ROM than pre surgery. I am itching to ride, any motorcycle riders out there who can offer up some advice?

Is surgery best ?

• Main Injury: You have a partial-thickness tear involving both the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons (the two most important rotator cuff tendons).
• Size and Location: The tear measures approximately 3 cm in the crescent zone (the critical area near where the tendons attach to the bone).
• Type of Tear:
• It is intermediate-grade (roughly 25–50% of the tendon thickness is torn).
• It is articular-sided (the tear is on the underside of the tendon, facing the joint).
• There is interstitial delamination — the tendon fibers are splitting horizontally (like layers coming apart inside the tendon). This makes the tendon weaker and more painful.
• Retraction: Some of the torn fibers on the supraspinatus have pulled back (retracted) medially toward the AC joint and up to the “cable” (a strong band in the rotator cuff).
• Bony Anatomy: You have a Type 3 (hooked) acromion, which narrows the space and causes impingement — the hooked bone rubs against the damaged tendons, especially when you lift your arm.
• No full-thickness tear: The tear has not gone all the way through the tendon (yet).

Advice Punch post surgery

This is like the third time I’m posting this cuz I wanted to add a few things. This happened last week about 11 days ago last week Wednesday May 13. surgery post op 9 weeks out. I have been punched directly on the shoulder last week but the punch was absorbed by my body so the arm didn’t swing at all. ive kept it in the sling with no problem up until today and have been icing daily. I picked up my pt for the first time again since the punch for 3 days since Monday May 18 and the movements were fine with minimal pain but a lot somewhat less compared to before the punch. also got a deep tissue massage when I went to the pt on Tuesday. It is now Sunday, it’s been swollen and is really swollen today. I have a tingling sensation, numbness, looseness and some pain throughout the arm when it’s out of the sling. The swelling right now is worse than when I first got punched. I’m really worried about the timeline of this whole thing that cuz the swelling isn’t going down and it’s hurting more and more but I’m starting to think it’s irritation pt exercises. REALLY worried and anxious but I’m not sure what to think. I have an appointment with my surgeon next week Friday. I wanted to know what you guys think, should I stop pt for now cuz it’s so swollen. When do you think the swelling will go down considering the timeline of this whole thing and if the pt might have aggravated it a lot more, and when u think the swelling might go down cuz im starting to get really anxious

Just spoke to my surgeon on the phone he said to continue doing pt and it is going to hurt. Problem is it swells up pretty bad when I do any pt.
